Chapter 450: Paternity Test
Nathaniel wanted to explain his innocence regarding Stella, but his feigned amnesia prevented him. โNo,โ he murmured, closing his eyes. โGo to sleep.โ Cecilia, slightly disentangling herself, drifted off. She needed rest for her pregnancy check-up the following day.
Meanwhile, at Tudela Hospital, Cassandra had calmed down. Her father, Ralph, had dispatched people to identify her humiliator, but the Evans familyโs many enemies made the task difficult. Paula, still upset about the engagement party, rushed to Cassandraโs side. โCassandra, are you alright?โ
Cassandraโs response was sharp. โDo you really need to ask? Canโt you see?โ Her previous respect for Paula, Ralphโs wife of five years, had evaporated due to Ceciliaโs perceived betrayal of Nicholas.
Paula, unfazed by Cassandraโs impatience, gently tucked her in. โIโm sorry, I donโt know how to comfort you. Donโt be upset. Everything will be alright.โ Her maternal demeanor, however, only fueled Cassandraโs suspicion.
โStop pretending,โ Cassandra retorted. โDonโt think I donโt know what youโre up to. Did you have Cecilia seduce Nicholas because you resented my preventing you from speaking at the engagement party?โ
Paula, stunned, collected herself. โCassandra, have you misunderstood something? How could I possibly orchestrate Cecilia seducing Nicholas?โ
Cassandra remained unconvinced, believing Paula's concern to be a performance. Paula's mention of Cecilia's long-standing acquaintance with Nicholas and her alleged attempts at seduction only exacerbated the situation. Paula, enraged, retorted, โI truly underestimated her! Cassandra, rest assured, I will handle this. Youโre the only one who can be the lady of the Rainsworth family.โ
Cassandraโs skepticism remained. โYou would offend your own daughter for my sake?โ
Paula decided to reveal a shocking truth. โCassandra, I am actually your biological mother.โ
Ralphโs past penury and powerlessness, his inability to rival Queenie, were the reasons Paula had kept this secret for five years.
Cassandraโs eyes narrowed. โWhat did you say?โ
โI said Iโm your biological mother, not Queenie. Queenie couldnโt have children.โ
Cassandra scoffed, โYouโre talking nonsense.โ
Paula produced the paternity test results. โTake a look at this.โ
The results confirmed their mother-daughter relationship. Cecilia, then, was her half-sister. Cassandra, regaining composure, asked, โSo my father isโฆโ
โRalph,โ Paula confirmed promptly.
Cassandra understood: Paula had betrayed Ceciliaโs father. They were half-sisters, sharing a mother but having different fathers.
โNo need for explanations,โ Cassandra interrupted. โPlease leave. I need some time.โ
After repeated assurances, Paula departed. Immediately, Cassandra tore up the paternity test and discarded it.
