Chapter 497 Silent Promises

Cecilia paused. Looking up, she replied honestly, โ€œI donโ€™t know. Right now, I just want to care for my children.โ€ She needed to reclaim what belonged to the Smiths. Then, after the twins were born, she could use their cord blood for Elliotโ€™s surgery.

Nathanielโ€™s heart sank. Cecilia began, โ€œIf you still mind, letโ€™sโ€ฆโ€ but Nathaniel interrupted, โ€œI donโ€™t mind.โ€

Did he truly mean it? How could he not? But if he was honest, she might leave. Heโ€™d never felt so humbled. His breath warmed Ceciliaโ€™s hair. โ€œItโ€™s cold. May I carry you inside?โ€ His voice was hoarse.

Cecilia shook her head. โ€œNo need. I can walk.โ€

She gently disengaged herself and walked away, Nathaniel following at a slower pace. Despite the snow, Cecilia felt no chill; Nathaniel was beside her, his fingers tapping on his keyboard. He was blind, using specialized tools. While she read, he would lean closer. Despite the ample sofa, he insisted on sitting close, creating a feeling of crowdedness.

โ€œIโ€™m going for a walk,โ€ Cecilia said, rising.

Nathaniel gently took her hand. โ€œLetโ€™s go together.โ€

โ€œArenโ€™t you working?โ€ Cecilia asked.

โ€œItโ€™s New Yearโ€™s Day. No need to work,โ€ he replied.

โ€œAll right then.โ€

Cecilia changed clothes. Returning, she saw Nathaniel in the vibrant down jacket sheโ€™d recently bought him. He looked gentler. She was stunned. Unable to see his outfit, he asked, โ€œHow do I look?โ€

โ€œQuite good,โ€ she replied truthfully.

She left a note for Elliot, saying sheโ€™d be back in two hours. Elliot usually slept for over three hours. Sven, being free, drove them.

โ€œSven, join us for New Yearโ€™s tonight,โ€ Cecilia suggested.

Nathanielโ€™s expression darkened. Sven was too attractive a bodyguard, making Nathaniel wary.

โ€œIโ€™ll pass.โ€

Sven had something to discuss privately with Cecilia, but Nathanielโ€™s presence prevented it. Soon, they reached the pedestrian street. After they exited the car, Sven said, โ€œYou two explore. Call me when youโ€™re done.โ€

โ€œAll right, thank you.โ€

Nathaniel overheard their conversation; it felt more friendly than superior-subordinate. Walking with Cecilia, he suggested, โ€œDonโ€™t you think a female bodyguard would be more convenient? I can have Mason arrange it.โ€

โ€œNo need, Sven is capable and professional,โ€ Cecilia declined.

Nathanielโ€™s brows furrowed. Sven was indeed professional, but also very handsome. Mason had said Sven looked more like an heir than a bodyguard. Nathaniel had investigated him, but found little information.

The pedestrian street was lively, a stark contrast to Ceciliaโ€™s usual experience. She bought snacks for their New Yearโ€™s Eve viewing. Shopkeepers often glanced at Nathaniel; he seemed otherworldly. Noticing burnt barbecue skewers, Cecilia told Nathaniel, โ€œLetโ€™s move ten meters back.โ€ He turned and walked seven steps, waiting for her. She secured the skewers, turning to find two girls approaching him.

โ€œHey there, Handsome. Can I add you on WhatsApp?โ€
