Chapter 617: She Is Also An Independent Woman
Priscilla soon received a text from Miranda, requesting her presence. She apologized to Cecilia, explaining, "I need to go for a bit and will be back soon." More important than appeasing Cecilia was avoiding offense to Miranda. Cecilia understood and offered no resistance.
Consequently, Miranda spent much of the time boasting to the group, while Cecilia remained quietly in a corner. One mother asked, โMs. Miranda, I heard your husband spent a few hundred million monopolizing the market through bulk purchasing. Is that true?โ
Miranda corrected, sipping her coffee, โIt wasnโt a few hundred million, but five billion. And thatโs just the initial investment; who knows how much more will be needed?โ
The sheer scale astounded everyone. Five billion? Rumor had it that this happened in just a week. A collateral branch of the Rainsworth family already spent lavishly; one could only imagine Nathaniel's project budgets.
Another mother seized an opportunity, saying, โMs. Miranda, my husband works in this field too. If thereโs time, couldโโ She hoped to initiate a collaboration between the Rainsworth Group and her husbandโs company.
Miranda interrupted, โIโm sorry, but my husband makes all the business decisions. Iโm just a housewife.โ
The audacity of her statement was palpable, yet no one dared to comment. Miranda then subtly signaled another mother, who turned to Cecilia and asked, โMs. Cecilia, what does your husband do?โ
Before Cecilia could answer, another mother interjected, โIsnโt Ms. Ceciliaโs husband Nathaniel Rainsworth? He had a car accident and lost his sight, right? I think heโs unemployed.โ
Miranda hid a smile behind her cup. Another mother then asked, โMs. Cecilia, where did you get the money for all those clothes and accessories?โ Another immediately added, โAre they from your husbandโs savings and insurance?โ
Cecilia understood these women; they were sycophants of the wealthy and powerful, motivated by personal and professional gain. She calmly replied, โYes, Iโm using my husbandโs savings.โ
Envy turned to disdain. Given Ceciliaโs spending habits, they assumed the savings would soon be depleted. However, Ceciliaโs next words reignited their jealousy.
โHowever,โ she continued, โmy husband mentioned his savings are unlimited. We could spend freely for life.โ
Stunned silence followed. While they found it hard to believe, considering Nathaniel's success as CEO of the multinational Rainsworth Group, it seemed plausible he had substantial savings.
A flicker of jealousy crossed Mirandaโs face. She offered a strained smile. โWell, arenโt you lucky.โ
Cecilia smiled, adding, โHowever, Iโm currently spending my own earnings; I canโt possibly use it all at once.โ
A collective sigh arose. These mothers spent their days with skincare, childcare, and shoppingโmost lacked the means to earn their own income. They admired Mirandaโs association with the Rainsworth Group, never expecting Cecilia to be independent. Priscilla, in particular, gazed at Cecilia with newfound admiration.
