Chapter 388: Burdened With Guilt
Leonardo denied, โHow would Halston know? Donโt listen to his nonsense.โ
โYou know better than I if heโs talking nonsense,โ Raylee said, letting go of him. โI know thereโs nothing going on between you and Halston. Both of you are just keeping secrets from me. But when it comes to you and Angela, I refuse to believe for a second that thereโs nothing going on between you two. I am torn inside. On one hand, I am jealous, and on the other, I feel like itโs a good thing you have someone else since Iโm going to die soon. But could I possibly ask you,โ Raylee sobbed, โto only be together once Iโm gone? I just want to spend the remaining time I have left with you.โ
โYou silly girl,โ Leonardo said, his heart aching as he gently caressed her face.
He led her to the couch to sit. โRayโRay, I can sense Angelaโs feelings for me, but at this moment, I canโt tell her to leave. Sheโs extremely familiar with your medical condition, worked for the Epean professor for two years, and has the best understanding of the experimental data. So, in order to save you, I have no choice but to keep her onboard. I pay her a high salary and have made my stance clear. As long as she respects boundaries, there are certain things I simply have to turn a blind eye to.โ
Raylee rested her head against Leonardoโs chest, expressing her sorrow by saying, โSo, you knew all along that Angela has feelings for you, but you have no choice but to keep her close for my sake. You let yourself be taken advantage of to save me, Mr. Foucault. Do you intend to burden me with guilt for the rest of my life by doing this?โ
โRayโRay, donโt feel guilty,โ Leonardo said, gently running his fingers through her hair. โIโve told you before, Iโll do everything within my power to save you.โ
The atmosphere had become heavy.
Observing the teary-eyed Raylee, the masked man was overwhelmed with heartache.
โIf you truly feel guilty, then accept your treatment. Your survival is the greatest repayment for my efforts. Iโll take a shower first, then Iโll hold you to sleep tonight.โ
Raylee sniffled, her nose tingling with a sour sensation, and gave a slight nod.
She then returned to her room.
Not long after Leonardo entered the bathroom, his phone began to ring.
It was a call from Angela.
After a moment of hesitation, Raylee finally pressed the answer button.
She remained silent. From the other end came the anxious voice of Angela, "Leo, didnโt you ever talk to Ms. Somers about our past? Iโm sorry that our past has become a burden to you. Iโll be more mindful of my words and actions in the future. Could you please not be mad at me? That was just our past, not our mistake.โ
Raylee was bewildered. Their past? They actually have a past together? Leonardo is truly tight-lipped, not revealing a single thing to me. Here I was, naively thinking that Angela was suffering from unrequited love.
โLeo, are you listening? Are you upset? Say something!โ Angela urged.
Rayleeโs face was ashen, her heart feeling as though it was weighed down by a massive boulder, causing her such discomfort that she could barely breathe.
The next moment, she ended the call.
She clutched her chest, striving to calm her surging emotions.
Who doesnโt have a past? Even I have one too. There was Casimir and Jeremiah. In fact, I was even engaged twice!
However, what she resented was that Leonardo didnโt tell her.
To her, his deliberate concealment was, in essence, a manifestation of lingering feelings, an inability to let go.
Raylee was lost in thought for quite some time.
She had yet to regain her composure when the cell phone rang again.
This time, it wasnโt Angela but an unknown number.
As soon as she answered, the anxious voice of Halston could be heard.
โMr. Leonardo, are you in the country? Thereโs a serious situation. Old Mr. Lorimerโs illness had acted up. Heโs in the hospital and urgently needs a blood transfusion! I remember my grandfather telling me that Old Mr. Lorimer has a rare blood type. Out of the entire Lorimer family, only you can provide him with one. The hospitalโs blood bank has run out, and itโs going to take some time to get more from other areas. If youโre in the country, please hurry over. It could save some time.โ
The remark came as a rude shock to Raylee.
Old Mr. Lorimer needs a blood transfusion, so why would Leonardo be the only one who can give him one? How is Leonardo related to the Lorimer family?
Question after question surfaced in her mind.
Could this be the secret between Halston and Leonardo?
Having chanced upon a huge discovery, Raylee promptly asked, โMr. Foucault is here. Which hospital are you at? Weโll come over immediately."
