Chapter 730: Spending the Night with Him
Bounty committed suicide by taking drugs! Alpha's face changed. He asked, "What did you say?" A past tragedy involving Bounty had deeply wounded the Augustine family. Mrs. Samantha had wept, and Alpha had suffered a heart attack. Their greatest concern had always been for Bounty. Now, another tragedy struck. She had taken drugs and committed suicide.
"Sir, it's true. Lady Bounty committed suicide and could not be saved. When found, she wasn't breathing. She was rushed to the hospital and pronounced dead."
"Hours before her suicide, Lady Anabelle visited her. They spoke privately. Betty, Lady Bounty's servant, reported that after Anabelle left, Bounty's mood was extremely erratic. She dismissed Betty, locked herself in her room, and took the drugs."
"Based on Betty's statement, Lady Anabelle is a suspect. Lady Bounty remains at the hospital; Lady Anabelle is in police custody."
Reuben understood the gravity of the situation. It felt as if the Augustine family's world was collapsing. Bounty and Anabelle's problems had reached a crisis point. Alpha faced another agonizing choiceโhis relative versus his true love. The Augustine family seemed cursed, perpetually entangled in misfortune.
Alpha casually donned his coat, his face grim. "Let's go," he said.
"Yes, sir."
Many hours earlierโฆ
Anabelle had just left the villa and was about to return home when her cell phone rang. It was Bounty. Anabelle shivered. She knew a confrontation was inevitable, and she wished Alpha weren't always caught in the middle.
Anabelle answered, "Hello."
"Anabelle, it's me," Bounty's voice was cold and weary. "Come to me. I need to talk."
"Okay, send me the address."
They hung up. Bounty quickly sent the location. Anabelle hailed a taxi and rushed to Bounty's mansion.
Betty answered the door and pointed upstairs. "My lady is waiting for you."
"Thank you," Anabelle said, heading upstairs.
Betty watched Anabelle disappear inside, a strange smile playing on her lips.
Upstairs, Anabelle found Bounty in a sweater, sitting on the sofa. Their eyes met. Anabelle initiated the conversation. "Bounty, it's been a long time."
Bounty's lips curled sarcastically. She gestured to the opposite sofa. "Sit. Let's talk."
Anabelle sat down. Bounty had clearly been waiting; she'd prepared tea. Pouring a cup for Anabelle, she said, "I thought you died jumping from the Red Velvet Room's platform. I didn't expect you to be alive."
Anabelle sipped the tea. Bounty's tea-making skills were still exquisite. "Ironically, we could have been good friends."
"When I jumped from the Red Velvet Room, I thought I'd die. But Joyce Brown rescued me and took me to Visionary."
Bounty's face was pale. She hadn't slept well the previous night. "Why are you back? You've been gone twenty years."
"Something here worries me."
"Worried? About Elvisโฆ or my brother?"
Anabelle remained silent; Bounty understood. "Anabelle, you haven't forgotten my brother. Do you forget his heart attack because of you? That at twenty-seven, he started coughing up blood from heart failure?"
Alpha believed only Reuben knew about his heart condition, but Bounty and Anabelle both knew. Bounty, a medical student, had once discovered heart medication in his room and a bloody towel in the trash. She confronted Anabelle about her affair with Marcus in the Red Velvet Room, urging her to leave her brother.
Anabelle frowned, whispering, "I justโฆ wanted to see him againโฆ"
"He doesn't need you!" Bounty interrupted. "He thrived after you left. He hasn't needed medication for yearsโhe's cured. I was right. Your absence is his cure. Your presence will kill him."
"He's lived with my sister-in-law, Lily, all these years. They're devoted. Have you seen Marvin, Lily's son? He's brilliantโa renowned doctor, a prodigy, as gifted as your son Elvis!"
The mention of Lily's son made Anabelle's fingers curl. She dug her nails into her palm, feeling no pain. Discovering Alpha's heart condition, she'd plotted her departure, using the affair with Marcus as a pretense. She'd wanted him to hate her, reject her. She paid the price; he slept with Lily, who flaunted her pregnancy. Anabelle, outwardly indifferent, was inwardly devastated. Lily's sonโฆ Marvin.
"Is his heart disease really cured?" Anabelle asked. His heart condition had haunted her for years.
"Of course, Anabelle. Haven't you seen him? I heard you spent the night at his place," Bounty pointed out.
