Chapter 33
“Tony, my eyes didn’t deceive me, right? Is that even an inch of skin left on that person? His face is completely sunken in. Could that be Peter?” Marta asked fearfully, tugging on Anthony’s sleeve.
Anthony wasn’t a faint-hearted man, but even from a distance, the sight made him want to vomit. It was terrifying and disgusting.
However, that was secondary. Peter had beaten Faith so badly she’d been hospitalized. But who had put him in this state?
Even though they suspected, they couldn't believe it.
Maria gritted her teeth, her expression darkening. "He deserved it, the bastard. This is his karma for beating up Faith so badly!"
Anthony widened his eyes and quickly covered Maria's mouth. He whispered, "Don't be so loud! Do you want to die? The Russo family's men are still here."
"Why are you talking about this now? Don't you think it could be Kyle's work? He said he'd avenge Faith. Peter showing up like this… it makes sense."
Maria nodded. "It has to be Kyle. It's hard to believe a man who seems so gentlemanly would be so cruel. But it's good he avenged Faith. He's a good man."
Anthony shook his head. They felt vindicated, but what if they were implicated in the aftermath?
Just then, Joe Russo saw Anthony and Maria. He frowned and approached them.
Anthony's heart raced. He was about to break into a sweat, but forced a smile. "Good evening, Mr. Russo! My apologies, I didn't see you."
"Hmm? It's the middle of the night. Why are you here outside the emergency room? Did something happen? Do you need—" He stopped, hands behind his back, his expression cold. "That was my son. Why? Didn't you recognize him?"
Joe glared at Anthony. "I overheard your conversation. Do you know something about my son's condition?"
"No, no, no!" Anthony shook his head frantically. "How could we know anything? We've been here caring for Faith. We haven't left."
Even though it was true, it was impossible for Joe to believe them. Maria's guilty expression gave them away.
Joe ignored it, instead looking at Faith in her room. He smiled coldly. "Faith is badly injured. If my guess is correct, it's a result of Peter's actions, isn't it?"
"Peter can be unruly. Beating her up like that was a bastard move." His voice darkened. "However, he's still my son. As his father, I'll support him, no matter what. Don't you agree, Mr. Curtis?"
"O-of course," Anthony stammered, forcing a smile. "Mr. Russo, I understand your feelings. I feel bad for Peter, but this has nothing to do with us."
Joe nodded, his eyes unwavering. "It's alright, I believe you. It's a coincidence. Faith was just beaten up, and then Peter ended up like this. A coincidence."
"A little beating I could overlook, but Peter… he's barely human anymore. This is cruel. I'll get to the bottom of this. No matter the cost, I'll avenge Peter."
Joe turned and left, his dark aura a clear warning to Anthony that he didn't believe him.
Anthony was still sweating profusely even after Joe was far away. He leaned against the wall heavily. This incident did involve them, after all.
After exchanging a look, Anthony and Maria quickly left the hospital room. They didn't want Joe to return and question them further. Faith had woken up; most of her injuries had healed, the swelling and redness barely visible. The doctors were amazed by her rapid recovery, attributing it to her constitution.
Only Faith knew that Kyle was responsible. At the same time, she felt he'd become more mysterious than ever before; as if she'd never truly known him.
