Chapter 116: Whispers in the Dark

Her body reacted faster than her mind, and Sierra had already hidden a steel needle at her fingertips, ready to strike, when the man’s aura suddenly changed. Then, a familiar voice rang out.

“Why are you here?”

It was Jonathan’s voice! Sierra’s tense demeanor relaxed abruptly, and with a mix of laughter and tears, she said, “I was about to ask you the same thing.”

“I heard some noises.” Jonathan didn’t mention that he hadn’t actually heard anything; it was just his sixth sense alerting him to someone’s presence, making him think someone had come looking.

Without giving it much thought, Sierra responded, “I’m just sitting here for a bit.” Jonathan entered upon hearing this and casually closed the door behind him. The emergency exit was dimly lit, making it hard to see their faces clearly.

“Want to talk about it?” Jonathan was always so understanding and composed. Sierra’s anxious heart began to calm down because of his words. She had been sitting there for a while now, unable to settle down, fearing her return might disturb Dickson, so she thought about waiting until she felt better before going back.

After a moment, she began, “I ran into the guy who’s been bullying Dickson today!” Jonathan frowned slightly, a gesture lost on Sierra due to the dim light. She continued, “That man was openly criticizing Dickson in front of me, and I couldn’t hold back; I confronted him.”

Jonathan’s voice grew colder, “Did you get hurt?” Sierra was too focused on Dickson, and Jonathan, feeling possessive, naturally wouldn’t allow her to care so much about another person. However, he couldn’t show this. Sierra shook her head, “I’m fine, just feeling a bit upset. These people didn’t treat them like humans; whether it was Brendan, Kason, or Shane, they were all the same. As Brendan had said, in their eyes, Sierra, Dickson, Daphne, and others like them were mere toys, like puppies to be played with. When pleased, they would throw you a couple of bones; when displeased, they would torment you in various ways. What fault did we have?”

“They hadn’t wronged anyone, hadn’t done anything wrong, but simply because of their looks, their family background, or various other reasons, they were denied even basic respect. It was truly ridiculous.”

Feeling the sorrowful anger emanating from Sierra, Jonathan was about to speak when he heard her say, “Mr. Yeager, I will succeed.” If her goal before was just for Lily’s sake, now she had a new purpose. She wanted to succeed, to become someone respected by all, to stop more injustices, to expose these wrongdoings, and to let more people know about them.

Despite the darkness in the hallway, at that moment, Jonathan felt as if Sierra was radiating light, her determination and sincerity compelling him to believe in her, even affecting him. He watched her for a while, then slowly said, “I believe in you! You will definitely succeed.”

10:54 AM

Hearing Jonathan’s words, Sierra couldn’t help but smile, “Thank you, Mr. Yeager.” Jonathan might not realize how important his words were to her. The previous oppression instantly vanished, and Sierra relaxed a bit, patting her pants as she said, “It’s getting late, Mr. Yeager, I should head back.”

“Wait!” Jonathan spoke up, “You confronted Brendan; is he going to let this go easily?”

“I don’t know!” Sierra shook her head, unsure. However, she thought Kason would protect her, at least until he lost interest in her.

She wasn’t too worried about Brendan, but she was concerned about Shane, especially since Shane had mentioned Jonathan today. With that thought, she couldn’t help but say, “Mr. Yeager, be careful these days.” She feared that Shane, that madman, might actually do something to Jonathan.

Hearing her caution, Jonathan’s lips curved slightly, “Thanks for the concern, but I think I’m fine on my end.”

“I’m a bit worried about Dickson.”

“Brendan might not do anything to you, but that doesn’t mean he won’t do anything to Dickson.”

“For Dickson’s safety, I suggest you send him away for now,” Jonathan’s worry was not without reason, not just because of Brendan, but also the possibility of Shane going crazy and targeting Dickson.

Sierra furrowed her brows, pondering this dilemma. But sending Dickson away now wasn’t realistic; doing so would only worsen his condition.
