Chapter 233: Nowhere to Run

Kavon couldn't sit still another second. He grabbed his keys and stormed out, dialing as he drove straight to the prison. On the line was the head of security for the Richardson family, one of their most trusted men.

“Any issues at the base?”

“None. Why?”

“Tell everyone to stay alert. Also, go to my office right now and check for any cameras.”

“Understood, sir. I’ll take care of it immediately.”

“One more thing: Get everything ready for a full evacuation. Wait for my call for further instructions.”

Kason hung up. First, he had to determine whether Shane was behind this. If not, then things were much worse than he thought.

When he reached the prison, he found Shane was no longer there. He had already completed the transition process and stopped coming altogether. Kason’s expression darkened as he sought out the deputy warden.

“Mr. Kason, looking for another prisoner?” The deputy warden frowned. “Aren’t you coming here a little too often lately?”

The Richardson family had always dealt with the deputy warden instead of Shane, despite Shane being the official warden. Shane rarely handled anything himself.

“Do you know where Shane lives?” Kason asked.

“I think he’s in Windmillville.”

Kason got no further answer and turned to leave, but a thought struck him, and he stopped. “Sierra was imprisoned here, wasn’t she?”

“Yeah.” The deputy warden, not knowing why he was asking, answered anyway.

Kason asked suddenly, “If it weren’t for the warden, Sierra would’ve been dead long ago.”

The deputy warden shrugged. “There were several times when he took her out of here.”

Kason’s expression changed. “Whose idea was it?”

The deputy warden hesitated before answering. “Someone paid for her to be tortured. If I had to guess, it was that fake heiress.” The Xander family’s scandal had been huge, so he’d heard bits and pieces. Kason hadn’t expected her to be involved. But what shocked him even more was the fact that Sierra and Shane had some kind of connection. Shane had saved her—more than once. Something wasn’t adding up. He felt like he was missing a crucial piece of the puzzle.

Just then, his phone rang.

“Mr. Kason, the security chief reported we used the best equipment and found two cameras in your office.”

“One was hidden in the doorframe. The other… under your desk.”

His desk. Kason instantly remembered Sierra’s gaze that day. She had been looking at his desk. Had she known about it then? Or worse—had she planted them herself? No. The photos were from before that. Kason bit his tongue, forcing himself to stay calm. Then, he gave the order.

“Evacuate immediately. If necessary, destroy everything. No evidence can remain.”

Hanging up, he sped toward Windmillville. He arrived just in time to see Shane walking out of his house with a suitcase.

“Mr. Goodman,” Kason rushed forward to block his path.

“Mr. Kason.” Shane barely glanced at him. “Something you need?”

Kason hated that attitude. Shane looked at everyone like they were beneath him.

He had heard the rumors about Shane’s reputation and had dealt with him a few times, but he still couldn’t figure him out. That unpredictability made him dangerous. Kason swallowed his irritation and asked, “Did you send those photos?”

Shane smirked. The way he looked at Kason made it clear—he thought he was an idiot. But he didn’t answer the question. Instead, he said, “If I were you, I wouldn’t be wasting time figuring out where the photos came from. I’d be figuring out how to get out of this mess.”

“So it was you.” Kason’s eyes turned cold. “If I go down, don’t think you’ll get away either.”

Shane’s only response was a mocking laugh. “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

“You seem a little paranoid. Maybe you should see a doctor. I know a few good ones—I’d be happy to refer you.”

Kason’s breath hitched. For the first time, he felt afraid. Shane was smiling. His tone was casual, even friendly, but Kason could feel it—that unmistakable chill crawling up his spine. He instinctively took a step back.

Shane chuckled. “Well, if that’s all, I’ll be going now.” He took a few steps, then suddenly stopped. “Oh, right. The offer still stands. You know if you need that doctor’s contact info.” With that, he rolled his suitcase away without looking back.
