Chapter 62: Running Out of Time!

Sierra quickly called back. “Mr. Yeager!”

Hearing her voice, Jonathan on the other end of the line seemed to breathe a sigh of relief. “What’s been going on with you these past two days? I was about to call the police.”

Earlier, he had remembered that Sierra had been sick and wanted to check in on her, but she hadn’t responded at all. At first, he hadn’t thought much of it. But as time passed, something felt off. He called her countless times, but she didn’t answer. He even called Bradley, only to find out that Sierra hadn’t gone home at all.

Jonathan’s concern was obvious, and Sierra felt a warmth in her heart. “I’m fine. I just lost track of time in the lab and had a bit of low blood sugar.”

The medical report was right by her bed. She had just looked at it. Her inflammation was severe, and her platelet count was significantly low. It was probably due to hypoglycemia.

“Where are you now?” Jonathan asked.

Sierra hesitated for a moment before telling him she was at the hospital.

Half an hour later, Jonathan arrived at her hospital room, carrying a takeout bag from a breakfast place. His expression was serious, lacking his usual warmth. He picked up her medical report and glanced through it, his face growing even more severe.

Sierra’s guilt crept up on her. Whenever Jonathan wore that expression, it felt like she was standing in front of a strict principal, awaiting reprimand.

Jonathan flipped through the report and suddenly let out a short laugh. “If you don’t want to live, there are plenty of ways. Starving yourself sick like this is just slow and painful, not to mention an ugly way to go. You work in a lab, surrounded by chemicals. If you wanted to end things, you could’ve picked something quick and painless.”

Sierra instantly caught the sarcasm in his tone and quickly responded, “I value my life! I won’t let this happen again. Mr. Yeager. Please don’t talk like this. It’s quite unsettling.”

She had always found Jonathan’s sharp tongue amusing, until it was aimed at her.

Jonathan remained unmoved, his expression unchanged. Sierra stared at him for a moment before suddenly saying, “Jonathan, I’m running out of time! My grandma is not going to make it!”

Jonathan knew Sierra was developing the drug for Lily. He looked at her, then handed her the food he had brought. Only after she finished eating did he speak. “If you die, there’ll be no one left to take care of her.”

“I know!” Sierra nodded repeatedly. “I was just too anxious.”

Naturally, anxiety gnawed at her. Despite the breakthrough in her research, it was still far from complete. She had originally thought that Lily had at least two more years. Two years should’ve been enough to finish the drug. With Lily’s condition deteriorating, two years was out of the question. She might not even have two months.

Jonathan studied her for a moment and asked, “Do you need my help?”

Sierra looked at him in surprise. “Are you willing to help me?”

Jonathan was a powerhouse. If he helped, the impossible could become possible. But she had never asked because he was always busy with his own projects, and he had no obligation to help her. Now that he was offering, she was more than happy to accept.

“Of course,” Sierra agreed without hesitation.

If Jonathan was involved, it was only natural for him to be credited.

But Jonathan sighed softly when he saw that she didn’t fully understand. “You know my standing in the industry. If I join, your contributions will be erased completely. Even if I publicly state that you led the project and I only assisted, no one will believe it.”

People would only believe what they wanted to believe. If he defended her, they would assume he had some improper relationship with her. Even if he said nothing, people would assume he was promoting her or that Sierra had some kind of hidden advantage. The rumors alone could drown her.

Sierra hadn’t expected Jonathan to explain this to her. She felt touched, realizing that he was truly looking out for her.

She shook her head. “I don’t care about that.”

All she cared about was saving Lily. Besides, she had been through enough in the past three years to ignore baseless gossip. As long as Jonathan wouldn’t get dragged down with her, that was all that mattered.

After thinking for a moment, she said, “If it comes to that, we can just say you developed it alone.”

Jonathan was momentarily stunned, then let out a laugh, half amused, half exasperated. “Do you really think I care about…?”
