Chapter 3
As Lemira entered, all eyes turned to her. With a stoic expression, she remained unfazed by the attention. Her simple T-shirt was overshadowed by lavish accessories: a delicate golden tiara, an emerald necklace, jade and gold bracelets, and a large pink diamond ring.
Laughter rippled through the room.
โMan, Lemiraโs so tacky, flaunting all those accessories like a nouveau riche.โ
โI bet sheโs showing off those expensive pieces to make Evelina feel bad.โ
Unfazed, Lemira approached Evelina and said calmly, โCongratulations on officially becoming a Langston today.โ
In her previous life, Evelinaโs arrival had marked the beginning of a nightmare. Despite her efforts to please her brothers, they all favored Evelina, with Lucian even wishing she were their biological sister. This time, Lemira vowed not to cling to such meaningless familial bonds.
Jealousy flickered in Evelinaโs heart, though masked by a composed expression. She shrank back slightly, replying carefully, โLemmy, I know youโre upset, but donโt worry, I wonโt compete with you for our brothersโ affection. After all, Iโll always be an outsider, and youโre their real sister. How could I ever compare to you?โ
Her eyes reddened. Lemiraโs lips curled into a sneer. What a delicate wrench playing the innocent victim, she thought. In her last life, sheโd been fooled by Evelinaโs harmless facade until the very end.
Caspian interjected quickly, โEve, donโt cry. Who said youโre an outsider? From today on, youโre my true sister.โ
Evelina lowered her eyelids, concealing a flash of triumph.
Lucian presented a box. โEve, this is a gift for you.โ
Evelina feigned surprise. โLucian, isnโt this supposed to be Lemmyโs gift? I couldnโt possibly accept it!โ
Lemira wasnโt surprised to see the limited-edition collectible inside. In her past life, Lucian had โkindlyโ decided to give Evelina the long-awaited item as an apology.
Lucian insisted, โJust take it. Itโs what she owes you.โ
Caspian, discontent, remarked, โLemira, even though Eve isnโt holding a grudge about you pushing her into the pool earlier, and Lucian has given her a gift on your behalf, whereโs your gesture of apology?โ
Lemira nodded. โI know, so I brought gifts.โ She removed her jewelry and placed each piece on a tray.
โThis antique tiara is from Asher.โ โThis emerald pendant is from Lucian.โ โThis century-old ginseng is from Rowan.โ โThis rare pink diamond ring is from Caspian.โ โThis jade bracelet is from Evander.โ โThis gold trophy is from Alaric.โ
Placing them on the tray, she added, โThese are all very important to me, and as an apology, I believe they show my sincerity.โ Sheโd anticipated Caspianโs question. Since Evelina joined the Langston family, her brothers hadnโt given her substantial gifts, only these valuables. She knew they would eventually be re-gifted to Evelina under various pretexts.
Caspianโs face froze. These were Lemiraโs most cherished possessions! How could she?
Lucian, lips pressed, asked, โWhat are you implying?โ
โLucian, Iโve said these are part of my apology. Caspian, do you think itโs enough?โ Lemiraโs demeanor remained utterly indifferent.
Evelina, surprised, wondered what Lemira was planning. Was this a strategic concession?
Evelina quickly spoke, โLemmy, these gifts were given to you by our brothers; theyโre too precious, I canโt accept them.โ
Caspian, furious, declared, โExactly, these were gifts for you; how could you give them away?โ
Evelinaโs smile faltered. She bit her lip. โRight, Lemmy, Iโm just an outsider; how could I deserve such gifts?โ
Realizing his mistake, Caspian hurriedly explained, โEve, thatโs not what I meant. Iโll choose another gift for you. How could I let you accept a gift thatโs already been given to someone else?โ
Evelinaโs smile returned. โThank you, Caspian.โ
Caspianโs heart melted. This is the demeanor of a sweet sister, he thought.
