Chapter 447
Evelinaโs face was as pale as a ghost, and she couldnโt find the words to respond. Trembling with fear, she stammered, โI didnโt say anything, please donโt blame me.โ Now she was in deep trouble. If Caspian found out, she was as good as dead.
Lemira, observing Evelinaโs guilty demeanor, had a pretty good guess of what had transpired. She turned to Caspian, โRemember that time you almost got beaten to a pulp by those thugs in the alley?โ
โLemira, you finally remembered. Donโt you feel a bit guilty?โ
โWhy should I? I ran out of the alley to get help for you. Thatโs when I bumped into Evelina, but the thugs found us. They threatened us to reveal your whereabouts.โ
Caspian frowned deeply. โLemira, did you tell those thugs where I was?โ
โThe one who betrayed your location was Evelina, not me. If I hadnโt distracted Evelina by claiming I knew where you were and led them in the opposite direction, you wouldnโt be here today.โ
Lemira remembered it all too well. Ever since that incident, Caspian had been increasingly hostile towards her. On the other hand, Evelina seemed to grow closer to Caspian, who often came to her defense. Lemira couldnโt figure out why, mistakenly thinking Evelina had stolen yet another brother figure from her. So, this was the real reason.
After hearing this, Caspian glanced at Evelina. โIs this true?โ
โCaspian, itโs not like that. That day, it was Lemmy who panicked and wanted to disclose your location, but I stopped her. Then I quietly went back to the alley to find you and took you to the hospital.โ
Evelinaโs face was drained of color, and admitting the truth was not an option. After all, years had passed without witnesses. No one would believe Lemiraโs word over hers. Yet, Caspian fell silent.
Orion eyed Evelina. โIf Lemira was the one who pointed out Caspianโs location, why didnโt the thugs go after him, but you did?โ
Evelina stuttered, โI managed to throw the thugs off track.โ
โAnd how did you manage that? What was Lemira doing at the time?โ
Under Orionโs relentless questioning, Evelina became visibly flustered. โI canโt remember exactly what I did, and Lemiraโฆ she was so scared she just ran off, even claiming she barely knew Caspian and that I was his real sister.โ
Lemira scoffed, โEvelina, youโre still a master of lies, I see.โ
โIโm not lying.โ
โYou claim you canโt remember what you did, but you seem to recall my actions very clearly.โ
Lemira glared at Evelina. โThe reason you โcanโt rememberโ is that I was the one who lured those thugs away, something you couldnโt possibly claim.โ Because admitting it would give her away.
Evelina, now sweating bullets, insisted, โNo, I really canโt remember, Caspian, you have to believe me.โ
Caspian glanced at Evelina before fixing his gaze on Lemira. โWithout evidence, your word is as good as any. How can I believe you didnโt abandon me considering youโre even trying to sabotage me now?โ Caspian wasnโt quite convinced Lemira had actually saved him.
Lemiraโs expression turned icy. โAnd Evelinaโs words are without evidence too, yet you believed her? Itโs all about trust, isnโt it?โ
Caspian, looking uneasy, pressed on, โYou say you led those thugs away, but how did you escape them? Theyโre not the kind to be easily evaded, especially by a young girl like you.โ
Lemiraโs face darkened, a shadow passing over her features. She remained silent for a moment before replying, โThatโs not a memory I cherish.โ
Upon hearing this, Orion immediately took her hand. โYou donโt have to talk about it if you donโt want to.โ
