Chapter 53
Lemira's thoughts drifted to Dorian Draven, a wealthy boy from Wyn—the new heartthrob at school, recently transferred from Gevin High. Word was he'd caused trouble at his old school and was keeping a low profile here. Dorian, however, was anything but low-key. He drove a fancy sports car, wore designer clothes, and was a hardcore gamer. In her past life, after Evelina had won a competition against her, Dorian had pursued Evelina, and they'd become a couple.
Lemira chuckled, shoving a love letter into her desk unopened. She hadn't even considered exchanging contact information.
Evelina, green with envy, exclaimed, "Lemmy, why don't you just open it and see?"
"It's not like I haven't gotten one before," Lemira replied. The last time she'd received love letters was in elementary school, before her parents' accident and before Evelina had entered her life.
Evelina felt a pang of discomfort. What was there to be so smug about? Her eyes darkened with resentment. After all her efforts to undermine Lemira, how had she changed so drastically? Was she trying to steal Dorian away?
After school, Lemira left immediately. Evelina lingered, then went to Lemira's desk and took all the love letters.
Lemira headed straight for the infirmary, hoping to surprise Orion, but he wasn't there. She texted him: "My grades are out—top ten! I might actually get into Orvin University!" Orion was the first person she wanted to share her joy with.
She eagerly awaited his reply. Instead, Lucian appeared. "Lemmy," he said, "I heard you did really well. Congratulations." Her smile faded slightly. "It's okay," she replied.
Lucian handed her a gift box. "To celebrate your achievement, I picked out something special. Didn't you mention you liked this brand of jewelry?"
Lemira glanced at the gemstone necklace. Was this meant to compensate for the emerald necklace she'd given away? Evelina arrived, noticing the necklace, and struggled to maintain her composure.
"That's a beautiful necklace, Lemmy," Evelina said sourly. "You should try it on for Lucian."
Lemira raised her eyes. "I don't like it."
Lucian looked awkward. "If you don't like it, I can exchange it. Which one do you prefer?" He'd gone out of his way to buy a new one after she'd refused the emerald necklace. Lemira saw he was trying to make amends, but the hurt couldn't be erased by jewelry.
Evelina noticed Lucian's changed attitude—his attempt to reconcile with Lemira. This wasn't what she'd expected. "Lemmy," she said quickly, "Lucian's just a typical guy. How would he know what girls like? You have no idea how jealous I am!"
Lemira looked at her impatiently. "Then you should've made it into the top ten! Stop whining and playing the damsel in distress! It's not Wendy's fault. I wouldn't have scored so low otherwise."
Evelina's eyes reddened. "I didn't do well this time; it's all—"
Lucian's expression turned awkward. "I know, it's not your fault. Come on, let's go out for a big meal to celebrate." Changing the subject seemed his best option.
Evelina's expression stiffened. She hadn't done well; what was there to celebrate? It was all for Lemira. Annoyed, she asked, "Lemmy, how did you improve so much? Is there some secret or shortcut?"
Lemira was emotionless. "The shortcut is focusing on studying instead of gaming."
Eyes reddened, Evelina burst into tears. "But Lemmy, you also got so many love letters."
Lucian immediately asked, "What's going on?"

Evelina said, "Lemmy's popularity at school is sky-high now. People from other schools are even asking around for her contact information."
Lucian frowned, remembering Orion's concerns, and advised, "Lemmy, you're still young. Studying should be your main focus; don't get distracted."
