Chapter 46

Megan clung to Zam’s neck, pointing and acting exquisitely, unwilling to let go. Zam’s irritation simmered, his anger rising like a volcano ready to erupt. Unable to keep his emotions in check, he leaned down and whispered coldly in her ear, his voice low and threatening. “Leave now. Don’t provoke me.”

Megan recoiled as if struck by electricity, her face showing an expression of disbelief. She never expected the man who had been so affectionate with her just hours ago to dismiss her for Julie’s sake now. A wave of resentment washed over her, but she dared not act out. She knew Zayn too well. He indulged her on the surface, giving in to her every whim, but deep down, he was a volatile man. He was unpredictable and capable of things she could never fully anticipate.

Megan reluctantly released him, then stood on her tiptoes to place a soft, fleeting kiss on his cheek. “I’ll be good. Don’t be angry,” she whispered.

Zayn’s gaze softened momentarily as though the sun’s warmth had just touched his face. He then adored and gently cupped her hair, his tone still affectionate. “You’re a good girl. Now, go change your clothes.”

Megan nodded obediently. With one stinging look at Julie, she left, her eyes shooting a hard glare at her as she passed by. She couldn’t help but feel a little speechless. If Megan hadn’t been so intent on showing off, none of this would have happened.

Once the door shut behind Megan, the tension in the air thickened. The living room was now left with just Zayn and Julie. Zayn walked over to the couch, his eyes landing on her wallet. So she really had just come back for her wallet. Realizing she probably thought he had already gone to work, which was why she came at this hour, a flicker of irritation crossed his mind. He picked up the wallet, inspecting it with the casual interest of someone holding a rare artifact.

His voice was low but teasing. “Julie, you came here that night to take care of me and made me some hangover soup. You still care about me, don’t you?”

Julie didn’t respond. Instead, she took a step forward and held her hand out. “Give me my wallet.”

Zayn didn’t immediately hand it over. Instead, his eyes flicked to hers with an air of challenge. “Have you thought about what I said yesterday?”

A sardonic laugh escaped her lips. “Zayn, do you really think I’m that easy in your eyes?”

Zayn paused, momentarily confused by her words and not fully grasping their meaning. She didn’t bother to explain. She snatched the wallet from his hands and turned to leave. But as her hand reached the door, she realized it was locked. The handle wouldn’t budge. A curse slipped from her lips, frustration building within her like a pressure cooker about to explode. She glared at Zayn with fury as she shouted, “Open the door!”

Zayn stood up, moving toward her slowly. His eyes never left hers, like a predator closing in on its prey. Julie instinctively stepped back, her back hitting the door with nowhere else to retreat. Her heart hammered in her chest, her breath shallow and quick as her hands clenched into fists.

Zayn stopped just a breath away from her. “Julie, you still don’t understand me.”

Julie turned her face away, her voice shaky. “Zayn, let me go.”

Zayn’s hand reached out to grasp her chin, forcing her to face him. “Were we not good before? Why can’t you be like you were and treat me well?”

Julie, whose patience had worn thin, slapped his hand away and shouted, “You’re sleeping around with other women and yet still trying to entangle yourself with me. Zayn, you’re so…”
