Chapter 86
Amaya looked disbelievingly at Julie. “Was Julie messing with me?” Seeing her expression, Julie reached for the grab bar, smiling. “Let’s go. Weren’t we going to meet a client?” Amaya paused for a moment before smiling back. “Tonsure do switch up last.” “What else did you expect?” Julie shot back. They chatted cheerfully as they entered the elevator. When the elevator doors opened, Amaya immediately spotted the young man sitting dazedly on a couch in the lobby. The moment their eyes met, Amaya couldn’t help but blush before looking away. Julie, on the other hand, remained calm. “What exactly does this stray dog want?” Amaya scowled. “Who knows? Let’s go. I can’t be bothered to deal with him.” She headed toward the lobby entrance, completely ignoring Christian. Seeing this, Christian hurriedly got up and ran after her. Hearing that Amaya was about to get into her car, Christian anxiously called out to stop her. Amaya, who was opening the car door, paused and looked up at him. “What’s the matter?” she asked lightly. “Can we talk?” asked Christian, looking as nervous as the first time they had met. Unfortunately for him, Amaya was no longer the same person. She was no longer someone who would be enraptured by his charm. She sneered, her voice dripping with sarcasm. “Didn’t I make myself clear enough? Or is it you who lacks the ability to understand my words, Christian?” Christian’s breath caught. He looked blankly at Amaya. Amaya suddenly lost interest. She smoothly opened the car door and got into the car. By the time Christian regained his senses, Amaya had already driven away. He felt incredibly upset. Just as he was debating whether or not to chase after her, his phone started ringing. He glanced at the unfamiliar number as he answered with annoyance. “I already told you I’d pay back the money. Can you please stop constantly calling me?!” There was no telling what the person on the other end of the line said, but Christian raised his voice in response. “You guys can’t do that! That’s against the law. Look, give me a few days’ time and I’ll pay you back. I’ll even pay back the interest then.” Once the call was disconnected, Christian unconsciously tightened his grip on his phone. He had not expected to end up heavily in debt after breaking up with Amaya. Before he knew her, he used to be an impoverished first-year university student who would work part-time every day. It was also while working a part-time job that he and Amaya first met; she had been a spending customer while he was a bartender serving wine. After getting together with her, he found out that she was relatively well-off, so he managed to coax and swindle her into co-sharing an apartment with him. He admitted that during that period of time, he had been happy. At the very least, he did not have to worry about money. Amaya would give him some money every month. He had never properly calculated exactly how much she gave him, because as long as he ran out of money, she would give him 30 to 50 thousand every time. She had been responsible for all his daily expenses, including his clothing, food, and living expenses. It was easy to go from frugality to living a life of luxury, but far more difficult to do the opposite. Ever since Amaya removed him from her bank accounts and stopped transferring money to him, he had been unable to adapt to a life of poverty. There, he had started handing the gifts that Amaya had given him to his crush to sell, but these gifts had not gained him much money at all. Previously, it was Amaya who kept buying him things when they went out; now, he was the one buying things for another woman. He quickly spent what little money he had on her. In order to satisfy his crush’s demands, he had started to take out loans online and max out his credit cards, juggling the debt back and forth. But in the end, the interest kept piling up and there was no way he could pay it all back. Moreover, during this time, he had unintentionally discovered that Amaya was the daughter of the Shaw family. As long as he was in a relationship with her, money would be nothing but a number to him for the rest of his life. That was why he had once appeared in front of Amaya with his own motives in mind. Back in the car, Julie watched Christian, who was still standing behind them, through the rearview mirror. She hesitated for a moment before asking, “Was he looking to get back together with you?” Amaya continued to drive as she answered, “No way.” “What was he doing then?” Amaya shrugged. “He’s probably run out of money.”
