Night fell, thick clouds obscuring the dark sky. Stars and moon vanished, plunging the world into complete darkness.
Inside the Chambers family villa, Zachary stood motionless by the window, his dark eyes fixed on the distant horizon. His face was pale, a loneliness etched upon his features.
Lucas, the butler, entered carrying a tray laden with food. He felt a pang of sadness at the sight of Zachary's back. Matthew, it seemed, had only slept three or four hours a day for the past two weeks. Claude and Dennis, it appeared, were determined to destroy the Chambers family. Their bank account could sustain them for only three more days; after that, they would have nothing. Three generations' hard-earned fortune, on the verge of vanishing. How could Matthew not be heartbroken? The Chambers family was at the end of its rope, with no hope of recoveryโunless a miracle occurred.
Lucas placed the food on the table. His voice was filled with worry. "Sir," he said, "the servants prepared some of your favorites. Please eat. You haven't been eating properly; you'll fall ill."
Zachary looked away, sighed, and picked up a cigar, then reconsidered, noticing Lucas's concern, and replaced it on the table. "I know," he said. "Leave it. You should sleep. You've been running around with me; you must be tired."
Lucas's eyes welled. "Sir, I'm strong, used to it. Don't worry. I know you won't eat if I leave. Please, at least a few bites."
Zachary's face softened. "Have a seat," he said. "I've never seen you sit. You're not just my butler; let's talk like friends."
Lucas, still respectful, hesitated. "Sir... this..."
"Have a seat," Zachary repeated. "You've worked for me for over thirty years, since I was a boy. We're both getting old. Through thick and thin, you never left me. I won't forget that. After Lilian left, you're the only one I can talk to. You know our situation. In three days, I'll declare bankruptcy."
He withdrew a bank card from a drawer and pushed it toward Lucas. "There's $1.5 million. It's a gift, my gratitude. Take it. Once we're bankrupt, enjoy your retirement. There's an apartment in Wes Rad; it's already in your name. It's small, but perfect."
Lucas looked up, shocked. "Sir, I've saved enough. This is too much. I can't..."
Zachary waved his hand. "Take it. You've worked for me for so long."
Lucas wiped his tears. "Sir, Miss YvetteโCyanbirdโshe knows many business gurus. If she could help..."
Zachary's expression hardened. "Stop," he interrupted coldly. "Even if we go bankrupt tomorrow, I won't ask for her help. Don't even mention it."
At the second-floor study, Yvette, in black, had been standing for ten minutes. The once-lively villa was deserted; half the security guards were gone, the remaining few playing cards. Only the study lamp illuminated the mansion's decline.
Yvette's voice startled Zachary and Lucas. Zachary's eyes widened in shock; Lucas, however, was overjoyed, deeply believing in Yvette's problem-solving abilities.
Zachary rose as Yvette calmly seated herself. Lucas, astutely, closed the door, ensuring privacy. Heโd recently dismissed servants secretly communicating with Nellie, but feared remaining moles. He knew Yvette's return signified something crucial and wouldn't allow interruption.
Yvette lounged, half-closing her eyes, an arrogant, defiant air about her. Zachary felt uneasy under her gaze. "Why did you come back?" he asked.
Yvette casually picked up a document. Zachary didn't mind; he'd left everything to her. It was a commercial area renovation document.
In under ten minutes, she finished the thick document. Zachary was unsurprised; Yvette was Cyanbird, after all.
Tossing it aside, she tapped a few pages. "These numbers are incorrect. The third line on the first page should be thirty percent. On the fourth, the costs are two percent higher."
Zachary checked; she was right. A mole within the Chambers Group. He was even more surprised by her speed; even a financial expert would take longer.
Yvette tapped the table. "Tomorrow, someone will come to the office. They plan to invest. The amount is your decision."
She left without waiting for a response. Zachary didn't take her words seriously; billions wouldn't solve their crisis. Yet, he instructed Lucas to receive the guest; he wouldn't embarrass Yvette's friend.
