Listen to this chapter:

As soon as Patrick arrived at the Chambers residence, Lora, Nellieโ€™s home lookout, messaged Nellie. Halfway through her coffee break, Nellie excused herself and headed back. At the door, she ran into Winona, returning from piano class. Although they missed Patrick, Lora reported he looked furious and cursed as he left.

Nellie felt a surge of satisfaction. It seemed Yvette had angered Patrick; perhaps there was a problem with her Argrol University application. Either way, it was good news for Nellie. Winona shared her amusement.

Inside, Nellie and Winona struggled to conceal their glee. Zachary, confused, asked, โ€œWhat has you two so happy?โ€

Nellie, linking arms with Zachary, replied, โ€œOh, honey, nothing serious. I just got a limited-edition handbag Iโ€™ve been wanting forever.โ€

Zachary didn't understand her excitement.

Winona chimed in, โ€œDad, you just donโ€™t understand us women. A good bag makes everything right.โ€

Zachary shrugged, letting them revel. โ€œAlright, if it makes you happy. Eve has even better news.โ€ He glanced at Yvette, glued to her phone, and sighed.

โ€œWhat is it, honey?โ€ Nellie asked.

โ€œCome on, Dad! Spill it!โ€ Winona shook Zacharyโ€™s arm, glaring at Yvette.

Yvette remained unfazed.

Lucas, having just seen off a grumbling, poker-faced Patrick (an encounter that left him annoyed and sweating), interrupted Zachary: โ€œMr. Chambers, Iโ€™ve sent Patrick away.โ€

Zachary nodded. Though the Chambers family wasn't Seacrity's top family, he wouldn't be pushed around by a school dean.

Winona sharply rolled her eyes at Lucas's announcement. He wondered what heโ€™d done wrong.

Nellie exaggerated, โ€œPatrick? The Argrol University dean? Oh! Didnโ€™t we send him a gift to help Yvette get in? Why was he here?โ€

Winona gasped, โ€œOh no, Dad, it canโ€™t be about Yvetteโ€™s application, right? Oops, never mind! Iโ€™m talking nonsense. Yvette, donโ€™t mind me.โ€

Seeing their silence, Nellie thought Winona might be right. Observing Yvetteโ€™s quiet, downcast gaze, Nellie felt even more satisfied. โ€œHoney, since Mr. Williams said Yvette canโ€™t go to Argrol, how about Baity University? Itโ€™s less prestigious, but easier.โ€

She turned to Yvette with a pretentious air. โ€œYvette, if you want to go to Baity University, Iโ€ฆโ€

Zachary interrupted, โ€œThatโ€™s not it. Patrick wasnโ€™t here about Yvetteโ€ฆโ€

As Nellie spoke, Lucas noticed a partially visible piece of paper: โ€œArgrol University Recommendation Letter.โ€ It was from Simon, delivered by Patrick, for Yvette.

Lucas was stunned. Heโ€™d been rightโ€”Yvette wasnโ€™t ordinary. Heโ€™d never seen a country girl so unmoved by the Chambersโ€™ wealth, barely glancing at the villa, jewelry, or Argrol.

Two days earlier, he'd been unsure about Yvette, but now he knew he needed to treat her better. This decision would later save his life.

โ€œWait, this is about Yvette getting into school? What else could it be? How does Patrick know Yvette?โ€ Nellie felt uncertain.

Winonaโ€™s happiness vanished.

Zachary looked at Yvette softly, โ€œThe Argrol principal, Simon, asked Patrick to deliver Yvetteโ€™s admission recommendation letter.โ€

Winona exclaimed, โ€œThatโ€™s impossible!โ€

Nellie was equally stunned. โ€œI saw the letter myself. Itโ€™s real,โ€ Zachary confirmed.

They noticed the letter. Winona examined it, disbelief and disappointment dawning as she saw the official seal. Nellie saw it in Winonaโ€™s face.

Winona mused, โ€œYouโ€™re really awesome, Yvette. You know Mr. Sunderland? Dad wouldnโ€™t have worried. How could a girl who hasnโ€™t finished elementary school have this connection? Something doesnโ€™t add up.โ€

Yvette, cool and impatient, left without a word. Zachary, proud, called out, โ€œGet home early.โ€

Winona, jealous, thought, โ€œWhy is Yvette favored? When I was the only girl, Dad preferred me. I have to get rid of Yvette. I could kill her!โ€

Zachary scolded, โ€œWinona, watch your mouth around Yvette. Thatโ€™s out of line. Youโ€™re starting your apprenticeship next month. Mind your manners.โ€

Winona, bitter, thought, "Just because sheโ€™s the child of the woman Dad adored? She acts so entitled." She blamed Nellie for losing Zachary.

She mumbled, โ€œI understand, Dad. Iโ€™m sorry.โ€

Nellie, glaring at Winona, leaned on Zachary, โ€œHoney, Winona was surprised. Donโ€™t be angry.โ€
