After leaving the Carter residence, Rebecca drove to her grandfather Claudeโs. She had moved out long ago, but visited Claude more often than she did the Carter main residence.
โMs. Carter, Mr. Carter is waiting for you in the study and asked you to come at once,โ the servant said as Rebecca opened the door.
Rebecca paused, removing her high heels. โGot it. Iโll go right now.โ
In the study, Claude Carter, an elderly man in his seventies, sat beside a chessboard. The white pieces were hopelessly trapped, surrounded by the encroaching black pieces.
Claudeโs hairstyle was impeccably neat, though silver strands mingled with his brown hair. His slightly sunken, murky brown eyes revealed shrewdness and the weight of years.
โHow did it get resolved?โ Claude asked.
Rebecca nodded respectfully, her tone cautious. โGrandpa, Yvette forced Victor to apologize to the boy who was hurt.โ
Claude raised his cloudy eyes, fixing them intently on Rebecca. After a long pause, he asked, โHow much did the company lose?โ
Rebecca was startled. This was the companyโs most significant loss since she joined. โAccording to the estimates, approximately 160 million dollars,โ she replied.
Claude tossed his white piece onto the chessboard, scattering the pieces. He stood unsteadily, using his cane for support. โImpressive. Lilianโs daughter. Shocking talent. She managed to cost the Carter family 160 million dollars in less than an hour!โ
While 160 million dollars wasn't a significant sum for the Carter family, Yvetteโs actions were a direct challenge to Claude. Rebecca saw his fury, but offered her perspective.
โGrandpa, I donโt think Yvette could have done this. When I arrived, she was arguing with Victor on the basketball court and probably wouldn't have had time to attack the companyโs network,โ Rebecca explained.
She believed Claude was overreacting; someone as young as Yvette couldn't possibly breach the companyโs numerous firewalls and sophisticated cybersecurity system, designed by top international experts. The only explanation was that Yvette had coincidentally met a skilled hacker who had helped her.
Claude stood by the window, his back to Rebecca. His stooped body and gravelly voice amplified the sense of foreboding. โEven if that top hacker isnโt directly involved, theyโre still her ally. Try to avoid any direct confrontation with her for now.โ
That day, the Chambers family was fraught with anxiety. In the morning, Yvette injured Nellie. In the afternoon, Winona returned in tears. By evening, Zachary sat in the living room, waiting for Yvette, without eating dinner. The Chambers family felt like a bomb about to explode.
At 7:15, Yvette arrived home, in a good mood thanks to her milkshake. She was the happiest person in the family.
Zachary waited silently on the sofa. Nellie sat nearby, her neck in a conspicuous white bandage, her eyes red and swollen. Winona remained upstairs, video chatting with Victor. Sheโd learned about the dayโs events from the campus forum and friends, and, hearing Victor complain about Rebecca, subtly spread negative comments about Rebecca.
As soon as Yvette entered, she noticed Zacharyโs livid face and Nellieโs smug expression.
โDo you know what you did today?โ Zachary asked, his voice tight with anger.
Yvette, nonchalant, replied, โThe Chambers family has nothing to do with me.โ This ignited Zacharyโs fury.
โYouโre the eldest daughter of the Chambers family, and you say it has nothing to do with you? Why canโt you be more considerate like Winona? Iโm trying my best to compensate you, what more do you want?โ Zachary said.
Yvetteโs indifferent glance deflated Zachary. He realized she considered him insignificant.
With resolve, Zachary declared, โTomorrow, Iโll have Lucas arrange everything for you. Youโre going to stay in the dorms for a while to cool off.โ
Yvette nodded indifferently and went upstairs. A few minutes later, she left the Chambers residence without looking back, ignoring Lucasโs calls. She got into a red sports car that sped away.
Zachary slumped onto the sofa, feeling regret.
โHoney, Yvette is too headstrong. Making her stay in the dorms is for her own good. After next monthโs banquet, it wonโt be too late to have her back,โ Nellie said.
Zachary, needing to maintain appearances, agreed. Nellie then pretended to faint, and Zachary helped her upstairs. That night, Nellie got what she wanted.
The next day, at Argrol University, Yvette learned sheโd become famous. The basketball court incident had inexplicably garnered her a fan club.
Yvette heard this from John, her fan club president. She didn't pay much attention.
In the physics classroom, Tobias was about to introduce Yvette, but the students were already restless. They knew about her and her โcoolness.โ
The physics department, usually ridiculed for having few girls, now boasted Yvette, the new campus beauty.
โMr. Sunderland, we already know Yvette!โ the students exclaimed.
Tobias looked at Yvette, who sat quietly. He wondered if her father had kicked her out. He found her kind-hearted. He recalled that she was the only one who stood up for John.
โAll right, everyone, be quiet. Yvette, please introduce yourself!โ he said.
Yvette wrote her name on the board, her handwriting reflecting her cool and carefree attitude. Tobias found her handwriting familiar, but dismissed it as a mistake.
