Chapter 4
I stared at him in disbelief, slowly releasing his arm. “I’m barely acquainted with her. Which one of us is your girlfriend, Jacob? Look at how badly injured I am!”
The redhead interjected again. “Can’t you just let it go? We had no idea you were his girlfriend,” she snapped. “We’re sorry, okay?” She added, “Jacob is a great guy. How on earth did he land a girlfriend like you?”
“I’m sorry, Sarah. This is all my fault,” Queenie said pitifully. “Please don’t give Jacob a hard time. He really likes you. I’d hate it if you two fought because of me.”
Tears welled in her eyes. Even Jacob looked heartbroken. What an excellent actress. Anyone unaware of the truth might have believed they were a couple.
I exhaled deeply and turned to Jacob. “Are you going to call the police or not?”
He looked slightly displeased, likely because I’d interrupted his moment with Queenie. “Cut it out, Sarah. Can’t you be more understanding? Like I said, it’s a misunderstanding. Besides, she’s already apologized!”
I finally saw Jacob for who he truly was. I paid for his teaching assistantship. How dare he tell me to cut it out?
Ignoring the pain in my shoulder, I reached for his phone, peeking from his pocket. He moved away, tucking it deeper inside.
Queenie stepped forward, feigning a kneel. “Why are you trying to grab his phone, Sarah? This is all my fault. Would you like to hit me so we’re even? Maybe I should get on my knees and apologize again?”
