Michael rested his head on Jonathanโs shoulder as he said, โDad, I thought you were really going abroad.โ
Jonathan didnโt respond. He just looked thoughtfully at Teresaโs back ahead of them.
They hadnโt said a word to each other since Jonathan arrived.
When they reached the door, Lucas came over to greet them.
Fiona stared at Lucas, her face full of confusion. โTeresa, who is this?โ she asked.
โThis is my brother,โ Teresa replied.
With Teresaโs introduction, Lucas smiled and greeted Fiona, โHello, Iโm Teresaโs brother. Just call me Lucas.โ
Only then did Fiona realize that this man was Teresaโs own brotherโand that the two of them looked remarkably alike.
โItโs cold out here. Come on in,โ Lucas said, stepping aside so Fiona could go in first.
Jonathan waited until Fiona had entered, then carried Michael inside after them.
Lucas patted Jonathanโs shoulder and said, โHey, Jonathan, you look a lot thinner.โ
โJust tired,โ Jonathan replied.
Lucasโs heart ached for him. In Lucasโs heart, Jonathan was his savior.
In the kitchen, Evelyn had already finished making the ravioli, and the food Jonathan had ordered had also arrived.
The driver brought in bags and boxes of giftsโjust the organic superfoods alone were worth tens of thousands of dollars.
Teresa was busy pouring coffee. She said, โFiona, please have a seat. I brewed some coffee for you, let me pour you a cup.โ
Fiona replied, โThank you. You should take a break and rest.โ
โIโm not tired,โ Teresa said.
โHow can you not be tired? You just had a baby, you really need to follow strict postpartum recovery properly,โ Fiona said.
โIโve rested for a long time for recovery at the hospital, and Iโm fully recovered now,โ Teresa replied.
Fiona said, โBut how many days can you really rest in the hospital? Itโs getting cold, so donโt leave yourself with any lasting health issues. Why not let Jonathan bring you over to his place? Itโd be so much better. His place is really comfortable, and the rooms are cozy and warm.โ
โItโs pretty warm here too,โ Teresa said as she was setting out the tableware.
Evelyn chimed in, โYeah, weโre doing just fine here, you really donโt have to worry about us.โ
Fiona fell silent. In front of Michael, there were some things she didnโt want to say out loud. She thought, โWell, I will wait after dinner!โ
Jonathan ended up being the one serving coffee and water. Lucas offered to help, but Jonathan waved him off.
Just then, Michael jumped in eagerly. He said, โCome on, Dad, eat up. Let me pour the coffee.โ
He hugged the little coffee pot and waddled around on his short legs, pouring coffee for Fiona, Evelyn, and Lucas. When he got to Teresa and Jonathan, he said anxiously, โMom, Mr. Lime, hurry up and drink so I can refill your cups.โ
Fiona couldnโt help but laugh. She said, โMike is just too adorable.โ
After contentedly making the rounds and taking care of everyone, Michael soon grew tired and began to feel sleepy.
Teresa was about to carry Michael off to bed, but Jonathan scooped Michael up and carried him away first.
โIโll put him to bed,โ Jonathan said, carrying Michael into the room.
Only then did Teresa look up and watch his back as he walked awayโthere were words she had been holding back for a long time.
Fiona sighed and said, โMike sticks to Jonathan. If two kids have to grow up without their dad around, how can they possibly be healthy and happy?โ
Evelyn replied, โCome on, itโs the 21st century. There are plenty of kids out there growing up just fine without a dad, and theyโre doing great.โ
