Listen to this chapter:

Jennifer got a call from the police station, accusing her of assault. She knew it was Irene, but she showed up unafraid.

Ireneโ€™s arms and legs bore several bruises, but they were not caused by Jennifer. Jennifer had only struck her face, yet Irene insisted she was badly beaten.

Jennifer explained, โ€œI didnโ€™t touch her legs. She picked on my sister, so I just gave her a quick lesson.โ€

Irene snorted. โ€œHer sister is no good either. She probably told her to hit me. Bring her over and arrest them both.โ€

Jennifer yelled, โ€œDonโ€™t even think about it. Teresa is seven months pregnant with Jonathanโ€™s child. Do you seriously want her to come all the way here? If anything happens to her or the baby, Iโ€™ll kill you.โ€

Irene pursed her lips and stopped pushing for Teresa to come. She stared at Jennifer again and said, โ€œI donโ€™t care. You have to apologize for what you did to me.โ€

โ€œNo way. Iโ€™m never apologizing to you,โ€ said Jennifer.

Irene sneered. โ€œIโ€™ll make sure you pay if you donโ€™t apologize.โ€

โ€œWhatever. Iโ€™ve got nothing left. Thereโ€™s nothing to be afraid of,โ€ Jennifer said sarcastically.

She lost her job, love, marriage, even her baby, and her mother was in prison. After going through all those things, she had no fear anymore.

Teresa was different. She was expecting a child, and that gave others something to hold over her. In the past, Teresa always looked out for Jennifer, and now, it was time for Jennifer to do something for her.

Irene sneered. โ€œNo apology? Fine, Iโ€™m gonna put you in jail.โ€

โ€œWhatever,โ€ Jennifer said impatiently.

โ€œHey, since you two know each other, why not just apologize and let it go?โ€ The police officer tried to mediate, hoping to smooth things over.

Jennifer was firm. โ€œIโ€™d rather die than apologize to her.โ€ She stared at Irene with proud contempt.

Seeing this, the police wanted to notify her family, but Jennifer waved them off, saying she didnโ€™t mind being detained for a few days. Anyway, she and Irene were totally locked in battle.

The police finally got in touch with Donald. They just found a lawyer and hadnโ€™t finished the paperwork, so Donald and Jennifer were still married.

โ€œWhat did you say?โ€ Donald was working at the hospital when he got the call, and he was completely stunned. โ€œAre you saying Jennifer got detained for hitting someone?โ€

The police officer said, โ€œYes. The conflict between them runs deep, and neither of them has compromised. Ms. Nelson refused to apologize, so she had to stay at the police station for now.โ€

Donald was even more confused. He didnโ€™t know who Jennifer had hit or who would push her to that point.

He dropped everything and rushed straight to the police station without a second thought.

Jennifer hadnโ€™t expected Donald to show up. Tears blurred her vision, but she stubbornly refused to look at him.

Donald noticed how haggard she had become, feeling a sharp pain in his heart. After the miscarriage, she should have rested, but she kept being busy and ended up at the police station.

As soon as Irene saw Donald, she started complaining, โ€œLook what your ex-wife did to me. I told you, none of those Johnston women are decent.โ€

Jennifer sneered. โ€œStop playing the victim. You know very well what you did.โ€

Donald sighed. โ€œJennifer, whatโ€™s going on here?โ€

Jennifer said, โ€œShe mistreated Teresa, and I just got back at her. Her father ruined our wedding, but she never apologized to us and kept acting large and mighty. Why should I apologize?โ€

Jennifer turned away. โ€œStay out of this. This is between my family and Irene. I donโ€™t want anyone to get involved. Just leave.โ€

โ€œHow could I leave you alone? Weโ€™re not divorced yet. I canโ€™t just watch you be locked up all alone,โ€ Donald said. He begged Irene to forgive Jennifer but was refused.

Donald walked to the door and quickly called Jonathan. Not knowing who else to call, he braced himself to call him, but Jonathan didnโ€™t answer.

With no other options, Donald could only turn to the pregnant Teresa, hoping she would come and help.

Teresa was at home when the call came through. She picked it up and heard Donaldโ€™s anxious voice. โ€œJennifer hit Aunt Irene and got arrested. I think you should know.โ€

Teresa, sitting on the couch watching TV, suddenly stood up. She forced herself to stay calm and placed a hand on her belly. โ€œWhat happened?โ€ She couldnโ€™t believe Jennifer actually hit Irene.

Donald explained, โ€œJennifer hit Aunt Irene to defend you. Aunt Irene called the cops. They tried to mediate, but Jennifer refused to apologize and is now detained.โ€

Teresa froze in shock. She couldnโ€™t imagine how Jennifer hit Irene, or how much Irene must hate her now. Maybe Irene would mistakenly think she told Jennifer to do so.

No matter what, Teresa thought she couldnโ€™t stand by and do nothing. After all, Jennifer was detained because of her.

โ€œIโ€™m going to the police station,โ€ Teresa said to the bodyguards by the door, โ€œDrive me there.โ€

One of the bodyguards said, โ€œSorry, you are not allowed to go out alone. Maybe you should call Mr. Lynn.โ€

Teresa said, โ€œHeโ€™s at a closed-door business meeting and wonโ€™t be reachable for at least two hours. Iโ€™ll talk to him later.โ€

The bodyguard said it would be best to wait for Jonathan to answer. Teresa calmly replied, โ€œIโ€™m just going to the police station. What could possibly happen? If you wonโ€™t drive me, Iโ€™ll take a taxi myself.โ€

If it werenโ€™t for her pregnancy making her so tired all the time, she wouldnโ€™t want to trouble anyone at all.

In the end, the bodyguard still drove Teresa there. When she got inside, she saw Donald talking to Irene, trying to smooth things over, but Irene remained unmoved.

Ireneโ€™s face was swollen. Teresa froze for a second, then smirked a little. It was the first time she had ever seen Irene look so beat up.

Irene saw Teresa and angrily walked up to her. โ€œWhat are you laughing at? You told Jennifer to hit me, didnโ€™t you?โ€

Teresa chuckled again. She knew Irene would think that way. Prejudice ran deep, and it didnโ€™t just go away overnight.

Teresa didnโ€™t even bother to explain. โ€œBelieve what you want. Making this bigger wonโ€™t help anyone. I just hope youโ€™ll forgive Jennifer this time.โ€

Irene pointed at Teresa and said, โ€œIโ€™m waiting for the injury report. Unless you and your sister apologize to me, I will never let her off.โ€
