Jonathan had made arrangements with the company to arrive late. He woke up early and got Michael ready. The two of them headed out to pick up Teresa.
He had even prepared Teresaโs favorite breakfast, and for a moment, he thought about arranging it in the shape of a heart. But then he shook his head, thinking to himself, โForget it, thatโs way too corny.โ
Michael dozed off in the car. When they arrived at Rosary Estates, Jonathan carried the lunchbox in one hand and the sleepy Michael in the other as they walked upstairs.
Teresa opened the door, thinking it was Jennifer coming back from grocery shopping. But when she saw Jonathan standing there with Michael in his arms, she was taken aback.
Jonathan stayed cool. โMichael kept fussing about you. Why donโt you come back with us?โ
Teresa replied, โLeave Mike here: You can go back by yourself.โ
Jonathan didnโt have it. He gently patted Michael on the shoulder. โCome on, buddy, wake up and say something to your mom.โ
Michael lifted his head from Jonathanโs shoulder, blinking sleepily at Teresa. He yawned after every few words. โMom, can we go home and sleep?โ
Teresa couldnโt help but sigh. โWhat time did Mike go to bed last night? Why is he this sleepy?โ
โWe watched the fireworks show for two hours last night,โ Jonathan explained.
โWhy were you even watching fireworks?โ Teresa assumed they had gone all the way to Nareigh Bay for the show. It never crossed her mind that Jonathan had watched them right outside her place, let alone that he set them off just for her.
Jonathan didnโt bother explaining. He just raised an eyebrow and said, โAre we still having this baby or not?โ
โOf course,โ Teresa replied without hesitation.
Jonathan nodded. โThen shouldnโt you come back with me? The nanny and nutritionist are both waiting at home to take care of you.โ
Teresa frowned, โI donโt want to go back to your place.โ
Jonathan said, โDidnโt we agree weโd do everything for the baby?โ
Teresa hesitated. After thinking for a moment, she was just about to let them in. Suddenly, Jonathanโs phone started ringing.
He looked at the caller ID, and his brow furrowed. Teresa caught a glimpse of the name on his screen too. The phone kept ringing nonstop, filling the room with its insistent tone.
Teresa told Jonathan to put Michael on the couch, her tone turning serious. โLeave Mike with me. You should go check on your mom. See whatโs happened this time.โ
Jonathan set the lunchbox on the table. โI made all your favorites. Eat it while itโs hot. Iโll come back for you guys soon.โ
โDonโt bother coming back for us. Just donโt come again,โ Teresa said firmly.
Jonathan turned to leave. He heard her words, but acted as if he hadnโt heard a thing, and walked out. Teresa opened the lunchbox, and the mouthwatering aroma wafted out.
Michael was sleeping soundly on the couch. He rolled over, wrapped his arms around Teresaโs waist, and nuzzled into her arms. โMom, where am I?โ He mumbled sleepily.
โWeโre home. Did you go see the fireworks last night?โ Teresa asked.
โIt was Mr. Lime; he set off a bunch of fireworks just for our family. Itโs a shame you didnโt get to see them,โ Michael said as he drifted back to sleep.
Teresa realized it was he who set off the fireworks. She stood up and walked to the windowsill, but the car was already gone. Glancing at the calendar she saw that today was November 7th. Tomorrow was his birthday.
Meanwhile, the nanny looking after Irene called Jonathan to say she had a high fever. Irene was throwing a tantrum, yelling that nobody was taking care of her and insisting Jonathan had to come over right now.
Jonathan was at his witโs end. โSeriously, arenโt two nannies enough for her?โ he thought.
The doctor was giving Irene an IV drip. The swelling on her face had gone down a lot, and she was resting her hand on her forehead.
Irene sounded so frail. โJonathan, am I dying?โ
โItโs just a cold, youโre not dying. Relax,โ Jonathan replied.
