Chapter 897
โThatโs a relief. I really thought I was dying. No way, I canโt die yet. I still have so much money to spend, and so many things left to do. If I die, Teresa and her sister will be thrilled,โ Irene said.
โEnough already?โ Jonathan cut her off, his voice cold as ice.
As Jonathan was about to leave, Irene suddenly burst into tears. โDonโt go, Jonathan. Stay and look after me, please,โ she cried out.
Jonathan turned back around. โIsnโt having all these people here to take care of you enough?โ
Irene shook her head. โIโm scared.โ
The doctor said, โThatโs how it is with old folks. The older you get, the more afraid you are of dying.โ
Jonathan fell silent. Suddenly, he remembered what Benny had said. Irene just needed some love and company. She had been a widow for so many years. No wonder she was a little messed up in the head.
Jonathan walked out and gave Benny a call. โAbout what you mentioned before, Iโm going with your plan. Can you help me out?โ
โSure thing, leave it to me,โ Benny replied cheerfully.
After the doctor left, Jonathan came back in and kept Irene company at her bedside. Irene kept asking again and again, โAre you sure I donโt have some kind of terminal illness?โ
โDonโt jinx yourself. Just get some sleep,โ Jonathan said, rubbing his temples. He thought, โIf only I had a brother or sister, I wouldnโt have to handle all this alone.โ
Jonathan only left after Irene finally fell asleep. He was planning to pick up Teresa, but work called, so he had to swing by the office first. It finally hit himโunless he got Irene settled, heโd never have time to go pick up Teresa.
By the time evening came, Jonathan got off work and headed back to Ireneโs place. When he walked in, he found twelve men surrounding her bed.
They all looked to be in their forties or fifties. Some had a refined air, some were delicate-skinned, and some had a glib tongue with a mischievous twinkle in their eyes.
One was feeding Irene, another offering her water, a third massaging her shoulders, a fourth kneading her legs. Some were shelling sunflower seeds for her, others peeling oranges, still others cracking jokes or performing magic tricksโand so many more attending to her every need.
In short, everyone had their own role in this little circus.
Irene sat up in bed. โJonathan, youโre just in time. Where did you find all these men? Whatโs going on here?โ
โDidnโt you say you were lonely? Are twelve people enough to keep you company? If not, I can find more. Iโll make sure you live like a queen,โ Jonathan said.
Irene was taken aback. โI donโt need this many people to take care of me. Iโm not a child.โ
One of the men sitting next to her said, โDear Irene, no matter how old a woman is, sheโs still a little girl at heart. Just relax and take it easy.โ
Another man chimed in, โLittle Irene, seeing you sick really breaks our hearts. You have to get better soon.โ
It turned out that women really did love hearing sweet talk. Having all these men fussing over her was something Irene hadnโt experienced in decades.
Jonathan glanced at his watch and said, โLooks like Iโm not needed here anymore, right? Iโll be off then. Take care of yourself.โ
โWait, come back.โ Irene still felt a little awkward, her cheeks flushing red. โHaving all these people hovering around me is just too much. Just leave two, thatโs enough.โ
Jonathan looked around at the men. โYou all heard her. Do your best and let my mom decide who gets to stay. The feelingโs that you have to improve their efforts, focusing over Irene even more enthusiastically.โ
After all, the pay for being a male caregiver here was nothing to sneeze atโplus it came with free meals, a place to stay, and a spot in a loan.
โJust keep an eye on them and let me know who does the best. Whoever passes your test gets to stay. Sound good?โ Jonathan said.
With that, he turned and left. He didnโt waste any time and headed straight to Rosary Estates.
