Chapter 927
โOkay,โ Teresa said. She promised Jonathan that she would help Jennifer with the last thing and then leave.
The next day, Jonathan informed Donald that Jennifer had asked Teresa to get the divorce certificate for her. Donald was completely against it.
Donald refused to go to the courthouse to get the divorce certificate, insisting that he couldnโt ignore Jennifer when she was in jail.
Teresa said, โThis is the last thing she begged me to do for her. She knows you wouldnโt agree, but she asked me to tell you that she hopes youโll respect her decision to get a divorce.โ
Donald went silent. His heart ached with reluctance and pain. He was unable to accept it.
Teresa could tell Donald still had feelings for Jennifer. She wanted to tell him that Jennifer didnโt have an abortion by choice, but instead, it was the car accident that took the baby away.
Even though Jennifer had once thought about having an abortion, to be fair, she later changed her mind. The baby was gone because of the accident.
Just as Teresa was about to say it, Donald spoke first. He said, โJennifer told me to stop caring about her and to date and marry someone else. Is that really what she wants?โ
Teresa suddenly went quiet. She wondered, โIf Jennifer truly wants Donald to move on, then wouldnโt that go against her wishes if I told him the truth now? Maybe not meddling in their fate is the greatest respect I can show them.โ
In the end, Teresa kept the truth to herself. She thought maybe it wasnโt her story to tell. โSince this is what she wants, letโs respect her wishes,โ Teresa said.
Donald remained silent. He still didnโt want to go to the courthouse because getting the divorce certificate meant there was nothing left between him and Jennifer.
Teresa said, โDragging this out isnโt going to help either of you. If you get divorced, and if you still love her when she gets out, you can remarry."
Donald didnโt know if he could remarry Jennifer. Once the divorce certificate was in hand, they would go their separate ways. He didnโt know if they would ever be together again.
โThe sun is about to set. Teresa has to leave for Jarisburg tomorrow. Donโt drag this out any longer,โ Jonathan, who hadnโt said a word until now, spoke up in a calm voice.
After a long silence, Donald agreed to go to the courthouse and get the divorce certificate.
It was the 16th of the month today, exactly thirty days since Donald and Jennifer had filed for divorce.
There were plenty of couples who were about to get divorced at the courthouse, and quite a few were there to pick up their divorce certificates.
Donald thought, โWhen people get married happily, no one would think theyโll get divorced angrily, right?โ
When Donaldโs number was called, the clerk at the counter glanced at Teresa, who was standing beside him. The clerk asked in surprise, โYour wife is heavily pregnant, and you still want a divorce?โ
Jonathan, who was standing nearby, couldnโt help declaring that Teresa was his wife, but Teresa quickly grabbed his arm, signaling him to stay quiet.
The clerk looked up, and when she saw Jonathanโs handsome face, she realized what might have been going on. She shot Teresa a thumbs-up.
She said, โYour new boyfriend is even hotter than your ex. Girl, youโre really lucky. Even with that baby bump, youโve still got a handsome guy after you.โ
Jonathan was left speechless.
Teresa had brought Jenniferโs ID with her and signed the divorce acknowledgment form on Jenniferโs behalf.
It was a real hassle to get a divorce. One had to go to the courthouse twice, once for the cooling-off period and the other for the signing of all sorts of paperwork.
