Chapter 994

โ€œI thought maybe she was just busy with work, but she hasnโ€™t even bothered to call me back. Jonathan, just be straight with me. Whatโ€™s really going on with Jennifer?โ€

Jonathan sighed helplessly. โ€œFiona, please donโ€™t worry about this, okay?โ€

He only said that because he didnโ€™t want Fiona to worry. But Fiona needed to know the truth. Since Jonathan wouldnโ€™t tell her anything, she made up her mind to head to the police station herself and get some answers.

โ€œFiona, itโ€™s getting late. Can we talk about this tomorrow, if thatโ€™s okay?โ€ Jonathan said.

โ€œAll right.โ€ Fiona noticed the exhaustion in Jonathanโ€™s eyes. โ€œGet some sleep first. Weโ€™ll talk about it tomorrow.โ€

Fiona had already started to piece things together. By the time morning came, she didnโ€™t need Jonathan to explain. Sheโ€™d already gone and asked Donald herself. She went to the prison bright and early to visit Jennifer.

Jennifer never expected Fiona to show up. Seeing Fiona visit her while she was locked up, Jenniferโ€™s eyes darted away, unable to meet Fionaโ€™s gaze.

She felt so guilty and ashamed that she couldnโ€™t even bring herself to look at Fiona. She really didnโ€™t want Fiona to see her like this, so down and out.

She turned to head back to her cell, but Fiona called out to stop her. โ€œJennifer, get back here and sit down,โ€ Fiona ordered, her tone leaving no room for argument.

Jenniferโ€™s body trembled. At that moment, she was too ashamed to turn back, let alone look up.

She just couldnโ€™t bring herself to face Fiona, the one who had raised her.

โ€œJennifer, sit down. Thatโ€™s an order. I have something to ask you,โ€ Fiona said, her tone leaving no room for argument.

Jennifer sat down in front of Fiona without a word, her silence heavy in the air.

Fiona spoke with weight behind every word. โ€œThe last time you visited me, you were riding high, looking so proud and confident. How did things end up like this?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sorry, Ms. Nelson.โ€ Jennifer hung her head so low it was almost buried in her chest, her lips pressed tightly together in shame.

Fionaโ€™s eyes brimmed with heartbreak and disappointment. โ€œWhy did you falsify the DNA test report for Jonathan and Mike? How did you end up like this? Youโ€™re a doctor. How could you do something like this?โ€

Jennifer shook her head. โ€œIโ€™m really sorry, Ms. Nelson. I let you down.โ€

โ€œYou let yourself down. Ever since you were little, I taught you to be independent, to stand on your own two feet, to make something of yourself. And now, youโ€™ve thrown your whole future away with your own hands.โ€

Jennifer was someone Fiona had witnessed growing up from a young age. She was the girl Fiona valued the most, the one she always thought was truly outstanding.

Fiona said sadly, โ€œYou worked so hard to get into college, to become a doctor. You couldโ€™ve had a stable, solid career, moving up step by step.

โ€œI heard Jonathan even helped you get promoted to deputy director, and yet, instead of being grateful, you ended up resenting him. Is this what I taught you?โ€

Jennifer just kept her head down and could only repeat, โ€œIโ€™m sorry.โ€

She couldnโ€™t bring herself to face Fiona. All the pride and glory she once had just made her feel even more miserable and lost.

Fiona let out a heavy sigh. โ€œSo, tell me, why did you do it? I asked Donald, but he couldnโ€™t give me a straight answer.

โ€œI just donโ€™t get it. Why would you go and falsify the DNA test report? Did you really think this would do you any good? What was going through your mind?โ€

Jennifer didnโ€™t say a word at first. But when Fiona kept pressing her, Jennifer finally spoke up, her voice trembling with guilt. โ€œIโ€ฆ I donโ€™t even know how to explain it.

โ€œThe first lie I told was for my sister. After that, I was just so scared of losing my job, losing Donald, and ending up in jail like I am now. So, I kept lying, one after another, just to cover up that very first lie.โ€

Fiona kept staring at Jennifer. โ€œYou said you started lying because of your sister. Was it Teresa? Did Teresa ask you to fake the report?โ€

Jennifer shook her head. โ€œI justโ€ฆ I just didnโ€™t want your daughter to take Mike away from us.โ€

Fiona was caught off guard, completely stunned for a moment. โ€˜What did she just say?โ€™ she thought, unable to process Jenniferโ€™s words right away.
