“My daughter? Irene?” Fiona asked.

Jennifer nodded. “Yes.”

Fiona fell silent for a few seconds, picturing Irene’s face in her mind.

“Alright, I know it was Irene who sued you. You broke the law first, so she had every right to sue you. I’m not going to defend you. But what do you mean when you say she took the child?” Fiona asked.

“She’s never liked my sister. She forced my sister to divorce her son, just so she could split them up,” Jennifer explained to Fiona.

“My sister got divorced all because of that old…” Jennifer almost blurted out “witch,” but held herself back. “It was all because Irene never liked her.”

Fiona frowned. “Is that so? I didn’t know that. I’ll ask Irene when I get back.”

“Feel free to ask her. She’ll just try to dodge responsibility. She always blames everything on my sister anyway,” Jennifer said.

“If she tries to dodge responsibility, I won’t let her get away with it. That’s my business, not yours,” Fiona assured her.

Just then, someone reminded Fiona that visiting hours were over. Fiona turned to Jennifer and said, “You need to really think about what you’ve done. When you get out, don’t go down the wrong path again.”

Fiona still couldn’t help but feel disappointed. Jennifer, the student she was once so proud of, was disheveled and gaunt.

Jennifer never dared to look up, too ashamed to meet Fiona’s eyes. Only after Fiona left did she finally glance up at her mentor’s head of white hair, and then Jennifer broke down in tears, covering her face with her hands.

‘It must have been Irene who tipped Fiona off and brought her here, just so she could see me at my lowest,’ Jennifer thought bitterly.

She had always wished that, in her teacher’s eyes, she could forever be the best version of herself. But at that moment, all of that was shattered.

At Rosary Estates, Evelyn suggested they all go visit Lucas together. She said they should start living as a family from now on, and when Jennifer got out, they would all be together again.

Teresa didn’t say anything at first. It wasn’t until after breakfast that she finally asked, “Who told you my sister was in jail?”

“Who else? Donald called me,” Evelyn replied.

Teresa exclaimed, “What?”

Teresa’d suspected everyone—the lawyers on both sides, even Benny. But not in a million years did she think it would be Donald.

“I was just about to go see Lucas when Donald called me. He told me your sister got sued by Jonathan’s mom and was about to be sentenced.

“I was so worried, I rushed right over. Now I gotta find time to check on your sister, too,” Evelyn explained.

Evelyn had already called the prison earlier and found out that someone had already visited Jennifer. Only one person was allowed to visit per day, so Evelyn would have to wait until next time.

Teresa said, “Wait a minute. I need to make a call.”

She wanted to know what Donald was really trying to do. He was already divorced from Jennifer, so he had no reason to tell Evelyn about it. And he didn’t even show up in court that day.

Donald answered the call, “Hey Teresa, I was on my way to court when I got into a car accident.”

“A car accident?” Teresa was stunned.

“Yeah, I was driving your car. I’m really sorry I damaged it. I’ve already sent it in for repairs, and I’ll pay for everything,” Donald said.

“Where are you right now? Okay, you’re at the hospital? I’ll be right there,” Teresa said.

Phone still pressed to her ear, Teresa hurried out the door.

No one noticed that Michael had been secretly listening in on the call. He was about to sneak out too, but Evelyn caught him by the arm and asked where he was going.

“Evelyn, I’m going to find Mom,” Michael said.
