Chad found us fast. We just came out of the courthouse, and hadn’t put the papers away. Chad looked terrible.
He said, “Ashley, you’re with him.”
“Duh,” I rolled my eyes. He grabbed me and started crying. Was he serious?
I wanted to talk to him. I waited for Cole to leave. When we were alone, he said, “I regret it. You can do what you want. I’m sorry.”
“Regret what? Not saving me? Not being nice last time?”
He let go. He didn’t want to remember. He started hitting himself. “It’s my fault. Can you forgive me?”
I was silent. He suddenly changed.
“It was Tiffany. She ruined everything. I didn’t tell her to see you.”
He grabbed me. “Please, one more time. I only loved you. I’m sorry. Just look at me. I’ll do anything.”
I was scared. I moved away.
“Are you serious?”
I didn’t trust him. He said, “I was too late. I’m not giving up.”
I felt a chill.
“I’m going to call the cops.”
I was annoyed.
“You only loved yourself. No matter who it was, it was all about you. You couldn’t stand that I was doing better. You’re trying to hurt me.”
“But I’m not alone now.”
“My husband will hurt you. He’s got people. Try it.”
I looked at Tiffany. I wanted her to see Chad.
