Chapter 73
Calvin couldn't understand why Hansel had done all those things, especially since he couldn't bear to part with Miranda. In the end, Hansel was the one who'd ended up in a bind!
Miranda's apartment was a mess after Hansel's unannounced visit the previous night. She cleaned thoroughly afterward. It was late when she finished, so she skipped the library and reviewed by solving only two practice questions.
For dinner, she made two tortilla wraps but couldn't finish them. By the time she cleaned the kitchen and sat down, it was already 8:00 p.m. She planned to solve one more question before bed. As she set her alarm, her phone vibrated.
A friend request from someone named "Sam Cooper" appeared. Miranda was confused. She didn't know Sam well, though he was one of Hansel's close friends. They'd met at several social gatherings and dinners, but hadn't spoken much.
After considering it, Miranda accepted the request, worried it might be urgent. However, nothing happened for half an hour. It seemed Sam might have sent the request by mistake. Miranda found it odd but didn't dwell on it, putting her phone aside to continue studying.
At the bar, Sam lowered his phone and saw Calvin, who had returned after taking Hansel home. He narrowed his eyes. "You took him home safely?"
Calvin nodded, taking a large gulp of his drink. "Good thing I left quickly. It would have been bad if I'd run into Mrs. Johnson." Evelyn had been visiting the mansion frequently the past two days, intensely questioning anyone she encountered.
"By the way," Sam said, "you were always busy when we tried to hang out recently. Why are you free tonight?"
Sam gazed at his brandy and smiled slightly. "I've finished settling my matters."
"Ah! I just remembered something," Calvin said, putting down his glass.
"What is it?"
"Has Miranda finished her postgraduate admission exam?"
"Two days ago," Sam replied.
"Huh?"
"It ended two days ago."
Calvin chuckled. "You remember that so well."
Sam smirked. "When have I ever forgotten these things?"
"Hmm. As expected of someone in finance. You're always so detail-oriented."
"Thanks for the compliment," Sam replied.
"You don't even bother acting humble," Calvin said. "Also, it's been almost six months, and Hansel and Miranda still haven't gotten back together. Unbelievable!"
Sam hummed in response.
"Aren't you surprised?"
"Why would I be?" Sam said indifferently. "It was bound to happen sooner or later."
"You're right. They're bound to get back together sooner or later," Calvin said, interpreting Sam's words to suit his own assumptions.
Sam was speechless. "That reminds me, you're close to Miranda, right?"
Calvin puffed out his chest. "Of course! I've even had Miranda's signature cream of vegetable soup! We're super close!"
Sam's eyes gleamed. "Shouldn't you do something now that she's completed her exam? You should celebrate with her."
"Celebrate? How?" Calvin asked.
"Treat her to a meal. You might even help them reconcile."
Calvin's eyes lit up, thinking of Hansel's recent heavy drinking. "You're right! Why didn't I think of that? Miranda won't accept an invitation from Hansel, but she will from me."
"I'll arrange a gathering to celebrate Miranda's exam. Then we'll create an opportunity for them to…"
"That's a brilliant idea," Sam agreed, raising his glass and concealing a slight smile.
The passage has been edited for grammar, punctuation, spelling, and flow. The sentence "Sam’s eyes gleamed with a she’s completed with her exterious glint. Shouldn’t!" was particularly problematic and has been rewritten to make sense within the context.
