Chapter 124: How Did You Find Your Way Here?
Hayleyโs POV:
Jeremyโs eyes widened in shock as he looked at Benjamin and me holding hands. His voice wavered as he asked, โIs it true? Are you really her boyfriend?โ
He directed the question at Benjamin, who was about to respond when I instinctively gripped the edge of his shirt from behind. Benjamin just smiled and casually wrapped an arm around my waist. โWe live together every day. What do you think our relationship is?โ
I was dumbfounded by his response! He stared at Benjamin, eyes wide in shock.
Benjamin, however, remained unfazed and looked directly at Jeremy. โItโs impressive that you admire my mateโit shows youโve got good taste. But my mateโs taste is just a bit better than yours. After all, how could a woman whoโs loved a wolf king ever fall for a mutt?โ
Jeremy stumbled, almost losing his footing. His expression turned extremely ugly.
I was just as taken aback. Benjaminโs words were harsh, leaving Jeremy no room to recover his pride. Then again, he was already being merciful by not using his Alpha aura to intimidate Jeremy directly.
Jeremy gave me a complicated look and said, โNo matter what, I wonโt give up.โ
I wanted to reason with him, but he turned and walked off before I had the chance. I was irritated. I explained it to him so clearly. Why was he still insisting on it?
Benjamin released his hand, raising an eyebrow as he teased, โMen as devoted as that are hard to come by. Sure you donโt want to reconsider?โ
I glared at him. โAnd you have the nerve to talk! Saying we live together every dayโyou were clearly taking advantage of the situation.โ And besides, a destined mate is someone deeply committed. Iโll only be with someone who feels the same way. Given how lightly you treat relationships, you wouldnโt understand that.
Unfazed, Benjamin replied, โWerenโt you the one who first said I was your mate? Ms. Carson, youโre the one who approached me first.โ
You were my destined mate. But I kept that thought to myself. Until I was sure he felt the same, I wouldnโt reveal my scent and let his wolf recognize us as destined mates.
After a moment of silence, I added, โEven if thatโs the case, you can misunderstand.โ Others will say we live together, right?
Benjamin shrugged, unfazed. โBut was I wrong? We do live together every day. Just not in the same bed,โ he silently implied.
I rolled my eyes. โForget it. Iโm done talking to you. Iโm almost late for class.โ Then, I practically fled to the classroom, making a quick escape.
โHayley, why are you in such a hurry?โ Christine asked, concern etched on her face as we almost collided.
I let out a frustrated sigh. โChristine, why is being human so complicated?โ
She looked bewildered. โHayley, what are you talking about?โ
Taking a deep breath to regain my composure, I said, โItโs nothing, really. Letโs go to class.โ
By the end of the morning, I had finally managed to clear my mind and set those chaotic thoughts asideโfor the time being.
After school, Trista and Lillian invited me to go out for lunch, and I also brought Christine along. Just as the four of us were about to exit the school gate, I spotted a familiar figure across the street, and my heart skipped a beat.
At first, I thought I was seeing things, but then the man across from me took off his sunglasses and gave me a nod with a smile. I quickly gathered my thoughts and made up an excuse. โChristine, Trista, you three go ahead without me! I just remembered I have something to take care of, so I wonโt join you.โ
Trista saw how sudden my reaction was and thought something was wrong. She quickly asked with concern, โWhatโs wrong? Do you need our help?โ
I shook my head. โItโs nothing serious! Itโs okay, I can handle it.โ
The three of them, seeing I was okay, decided not to pry further and continued on their way. I kept my eyes on the figure across the street until he approached me and greeted me, โHarmony, itโs been a while.โ
I looked at him, surprised and stunned. After taking a moment to compose myself, I smiled and asked, โHow did you find your way here?โ
