Chapter 281: Found

Hayleyโ€™s POV:

Christopher said confidently, โ€œYouโ€™re wrong. This isnโ€™t her. It isnโ€™t her!โ€ With that, Christopher walked away.

Christineโ€™s parents seemed to snap out of their trance and turned to look at me. โ€œThis isnโ€™t Christine. This canโ€™t be Christine. Our wolves didnโ€™t sense her presence. This isnโ€™t our daughter.โ€ Christineโ€™s mother repeated it over and over, while her father, clinging to a shred of rationality, said, โ€œThe body is unrecognizable. The only way to be sure is to have it tested.โ€

So, he contacted a local testing center, and the results came in quicklyโ€”within 24 hours, we had the report. Everyone held their breath as he pulled out the document. When he saw that the match was less than one percent, everyone exhaled in relief.

โ€œI knew it, this isnโ€™t Christine. It couldnโ€™t be,โ€ Christineโ€™s mother cried, the evidence before her proving the body wasnโ€™t Christineโ€™s, which meant Christine was probably still alive. The news brought a sense of relief to me as well. Christine, you must still be alive, right?

โ€œFound her! Found her!โ€ Christopher suddenly appeared, his joyful voice breaking everyoneโ€™s thoughts. I snapped out of my daze and rushed forward. โ€œDid you find Christine?โ€

Christopher nodded excitedly. โ€œThe embassy just sent word. Christine contacted them. She went to the embassy to renew her passport. Sheโ€™s probably on her way back home.โ€

The news hit me so suddenly that I could hardly believe it. โ€œIs this true? Where is she now?โ€

Christopher answered, โ€œChristine renewed her passport two days ago. Sheโ€™s probably already back home. Once sheโ€™s there, weโ€™ll be able to reach her.โ€

โ€œBut if sheโ€™s okay, why hasnโ€™t she contacted us?โ€ I asked, confused. Everyone went silent. This didnโ€™t make sense. It was so unlike Christine to not reach out.

โ€œThe embassy confirmed everything. All her details matched. Itโ€™s her.โ€ Christopherโ€™s certainty made me believe it too. It was Christine. โ€œThen letโ€™s go back home,โ€ Benjamin suggested. I nodded, agreeing.

When Christineโ€™s parents heard she might already be home, they were overjoyed. They immediately booked the next available flight and returned with us.

After several hours of flying, we landed safely at Midnight Packโ€™s airport. We all hurried out of the terminal, eager to get to Christineโ€™s house. However, when we arrived, the house was empty. Christine wasnโ€™t there.

Christopher looked utterly lost. โ€œThis canโ€™t be happening. Whatโ€™s going on?โ€ I tried to comfort him. โ€œDonโ€™t worry. If itโ€™s Christine, sheโ€™ll come home.โ€

โ€œBut where is she now?โ€ Christopherโ€™s question left us all lost in thought. We left Christineโ€™s house and headed home, Benjamin and I driving together.

In the car, I turned to Benjamin, my mind racing. โ€œWhat do you think is going on? If Christineโ€™s back, why hasnโ€™t she come home yet?โ€
