Chapter 281: Found
Hayleyโs POV:
Christopher said confidently, โYouโre wrong. This isnโt her. It isnโt her!โ With that, Christopher walked away.
Christineโs parents seemed to snap out of their trance and turned to look at me. โThis isnโt Christine. This canโt be Christine. Our wolves didnโt sense her presence. This isnโt our daughter.โ Christineโs mother repeated it over and over, while her father, clinging to a shred of rationality, said, โThe body is unrecognizable. The only way to be sure is to have it tested.โ
So, he contacted a local testing center, and the results came in quicklyโwithin 24 hours, we had the report. Everyone held their breath as he pulled out the document. When he saw that the match was less than one percent, everyone exhaled in relief.
โI knew it, this isnโt Christine. It couldnโt be,โ Christineโs mother cried, the evidence before her proving the body wasnโt Christineโs, which meant Christine was probably still alive. The news brought a sense of relief to me as well. Christine, you must still be alive, right?
โFound her! Found her!โ Christopher suddenly appeared, his joyful voice breaking everyoneโs thoughts. I snapped out of my daze and rushed forward. โDid you find Christine?โ
Christopher nodded excitedly. โThe embassy just sent word. Christine contacted them. She went to the embassy to renew her passport. Sheโs probably on her way back home.โ
The news hit me so suddenly that I could hardly believe it. โIs this true? Where is she now?โ
Christopher answered, โChristine renewed her passport two days ago. Sheโs probably already back home. Once sheโs there, weโll be able to reach her.โ
โBut if sheโs okay, why hasnโt she contacted us?โ I asked, confused. Everyone went silent. This didnโt make sense. It was so unlike Christine to not reach out.
โThe embassy confirmed everything. All her details matched. Itโs her.โ Christopherโs certainty made me believe it too. It was Christine. โThen letโs go back home,โ Benjamin suggested. I nodded, agreeing.
When Christineโs parents heard she might already be home, they were overjoyed. They immediately booked the next available flight and returned with us.
After several hours of flying, we landed safely at Midnight Packโs airport. We all hurried out of the terminal, eager to get to Christineโs house. However, when we arrived, the house was empty. Christine wasnโt there.
Christopher looked utterly lost. โThis canโt be happening. Whatโs going on?โ I tried to comfort him. โDonโt worry. If itโs Christine, sheโll come home.โ
โBut where is she now?โ Christopherโs question left us all lost in thought. We left Christineโs house and headed home, Benjamin and I driving together.
In the car, I turned to Benjamin, my mind racing. โWhat do you think is going on? If Christineโs back, why hasnโt she come home yet?โ
