Chapter 426: What If I Canโt Come Up With Anything?
Hayleyโs POV:
Hera told me she didnโt sense anything out of the ordinary. I spent quite a while trying to make sense of it, but I couldnโt come up with any answers. As the workday was winding down, Tanner stopped by to check on me.
โStill staring at that thing?โ he asked, peering over at the blank sheet in my hands.
I looked up and sighed. โWhat do you think? What could possibly be so mysterious about a plain A4 sheet?โ
Tanner shrugged. โI honestly donโt know. Maybe itโs just meant for you to be creative and come up with something on your own, without any specific direction.โ
โIs that the case?โ I muttered, feeling more confused, though it seemed like there was no other explanation.
โThatโs just my guess,โ he said with another shrug. โWho can really say?โ
I felt stuck, frustration settling in as I sighed again. โBut the first draft is due in a month. What if I canโt come up with anything by then?โ
Tanner gently patted my shoulder. โDonโt stress about it. Youโre going to be the Luna of the Midnight Pack, after all. Even if you donโt finish on time, no oneโs going to make a big deal out of it. Just take a break for now! Itโs almost quitting time, and Iโll drive you home.โ
I shook my head. โNo, Iโm fine. I can get home by myself.โ
Tannerโs expression grew worried. โNo way. After what happened last time, I canโt just let you go alone. If anything goes wrong again, Ben might punishโฆโ
I sighed, feeling guilty for worrying him, but I finally relented. โAlright, fine. Letโs go.โ
After Tanner dropped me off at the entrance to my neighborhood, Hera suddenly became alert. I realized Benjamin was nearby. Sure enough, Tanner rolled down the window, and I saw him standing there.
โBen! Are you here to see Hayley?โ Tanner asked, surprised.
Benjamin raised an eyebrow, shaking the keys in his hand. โNo, I live here.โ
Tannerโs eyes widened in shock. โWait, what? You moved? Are you two living together now?โ
I quickly jumped in, trying to clear up the misunderstanding. โNo, he moved into the apartment next door. Heโs just my new neighbor.โ
Tanner let out a deep sigh of relief. โOh, thank goodness. I was starting to worry.โ
I couldnโt help but laugh. โWhatโs with that look on your face? You look like youโve just escaped some kindโฆโ
Tanner coughed awkwardly, trying to cover up his embarrassment. โWell, I was just worried about you two getting carried away before youโre officially a couple. You know, if that happens, you might not get the Moon Goddessโ blessingโฆโ
I rolled my eyes, lightly hitting him on the arm. โWhat are you even talking about?โ
Tanner quickly nodded. โRight, right, sorry. Iโm overthinking itโฆ Trying to change the subject, he added, โBy the way, your letter arrived at the Southwells. Henry said heโll bring it to you. Did you get it?โ
โNot yet,โ I replied. โHeโll probably drop it off later.โ
Tannerโs excitement suddenly spiked. โOh, and congratulations on getting into New College! Thatโs amazing! When should we throw you a celebration party?โ
Before I could respond, Benjamin chimed in, โI think thatโs a great idea. What do you think about having a celebration?โ He looked to me for my thoughts.
I thought about it for a moment before saying, โJust keep it simple. We can set a date, gather everyone for some drinks and conversation. Iโll be heading to Cryving soon, and I probably wonโt be back often except for the holidays.โ
โThat sounds perfect! Iโm all for it!โ Tanner said eagerly. โHayley, leave everything to me for the party,โ he offered.
I smiled at him, grateful. โThanks, I appreciate it.โ
Benjamin gave Tanner a pat on the shoulder. โThanks, man.โ
Tanner grinned. โNo problem, Ben. Iโm just doing this for our future Luna. Itโs the least I can do.โ โAlright, itโs settled then. Iโll pick a good day, and weโll all get together,โ Tanner said, clearly excited. After everything was decided, I got out of the car and told him, โIโm heading home now. Drive safe.โ
Tanner waved. โGo ahead. Iโll be fine here.โ
After watching him drive off, I felt Heraโs urgency and quickly moved toward Benjamin. He reached for my hand. โLetโs go. Time to head back.โ
We walked together into the neighborhood, but as soon as we stepped out of the elevator, we unexpectedly ran into someone.
