Chapter 684: Assist With the Investigation

Hayleyโ€™s POV:

Benjamin stepped in front of me, his voice sharp. โ€œFrederick, whatโ€™s this about?โ€

Frederick responded in a level tone, โ€œApologies, Mr. Southwell. It came up suddenly, so I didnโ€™t have time to inform you in advance. Early this morning, three prominent physics professors from New College were found dead. Ms. Carsonโ€™s notes were discovered at the scene, making her the primary suspect. She must cooperate with our investigation.โ€

Benjamin scoffed. โ€œYour investigative skills need serious work. Hasnโ€™t anyone told you Hayley hasnโ€™t been attending class lately? And your wolf canโ€™t tell that sheโ€™s just an Omega? How do you expect her to kill three professors, all ranked above her?โ€

Frederick remained calm. โ€œAs you know, skipping class doesnโ€™t mean she hasnโ€™t been on campus.โ€

Benjaminโ€™s eyes glowed red. I could tell he was about to lose his temper, so I quickly calmed him down, agreeing to visit the scene.

The incident took place at New College, an area with heavy foot traffic. To control rumors, the authorities had set up two barricades to keep bystanders away. After passing through, we arrived outside the Physics Research Building, where the deaths had occurred.

Just then, Hera alerted meโ€”she had caught a familiar scent. I immediately glanced toward the crowd near the barricades. Sure enough, among the onlookers stood Loretta. She wore the same coat as the suspected perpetrator, holding a book while peering inside on tiptoe. My expression hardened, and my fists clenched. If Loretta stayed there any longer, sheโ€™d get dragged into the investigation. Since she was the one handling my notes, the moment the police questioned the department, sheโ€™d become the real suspect.

Benjaminโ€™s POV:

I noticed the change in Hayleyโ€™s expression and followed her line of sightโ€”Loretta was there, lurking suspiciously. It didnโ€™t take me long to figure out the situation. Hayley and I shared a knowing glance before I gave her a nod. I acted as if I were searching for clues, then skillfully slipped away unnoticed.

โ€œThere are so many officers here. Whatโ€™s happening?โ€ Loretta murmured to herself, clearly intrigued.

Just as she finished speaking, I tapped her on the shoulder. She instinctively turned, her eyes widening in shock. โ€œBenโ€”โ€

I quickly gestured for her to stay quiet. With a subtle motion, I signaled her to stay calm. Then, tilting my head slightly, I led her away in silence.

Hayleyโ€™s POV:

I let out a breath of relief as I watched Benjamin successfully take Loretta away. Meanwhile, the forensic doctor, who had been handling the autopsy, finally concluded. He walked up to Frederick, removed his mask, and said casually, โ€œPreliminary findings suggest suicide by poisoning. No signs of homicide.โ€

โ€œSuicide?โ€ Frederick questioned, frowning. โ€œAre you sure? Why would three accomplished professors take their own lives?โ€

โ€œCaptain Langston, please trust my expertise. Unless, of course, youโ€™d rather conduct the examination yourself.โ€ The forensic doctorโ€™s tone was sharp as he pulled off his gloves and offered them to Frederick.

Frederick grimaced, clearly repulsed. โ€œThat wonโ€™t be necessary,โ€ he said, his brows furrowed. โ€œJust provide a thorough report, and Iโ€™ll handle the rest.โ€

โ€œSuit yourself.โ€ The forensic doctor tossed his gloves into a plastic bag his assistant handed him and strode out of the cordoned area.

โ€œThe case isnโ€™t closed. Where are you going?โ€ Frederick called after him.

โ€œMy partโ€™s done.โ€ Without looking back, the doctor waved lazily. โ€œSee you next time.โ€

Like everyone else, I was at a loss for words. Seeing the forensic doctor again would never be a good thing. Just as he left, a group of well-dressed individuals hurried onto the scene.
