Chapter 686: Alpha King Appears

Hayleyโ€™s POV:

As we stepped past the cordon, Samson dismissed his subordinates, leaving just the two of us. He reassured me gently, โ€œDonโ€™t worry about this. Iโ€™ll handle everything for you. Now that youโ€™re in college, focus on your studies. No one will trouble you again.โ€

I arched an eyebrow, smiling as I replied, โ€œIโ€™m not worried.โ€ I felt at ease, instead. After a brief pause, I changed the subject. โ€œSamson, you brought the best forensic expert in the system and personally showed up as the Alpha King. A simple suicide wouldnโ€™t require all this effort, would it?โ€

Samson chuckled, but his expression darkened. โ€œNothing gets past you, does it?โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re rightโ€”thereโ€™s more to this case. In the past six months, five physicists in this city alone have died the same way.โ€

Sure enough, it was another case involving physicists. My mood sank. These incidents were connected to the mass suicides Dominic had mentioned.

โ€œPhysics is a complex field, and those who succeed in it are rare talents, usually ranking above Beta,โ€ Samson stated. โ€œIt plays a crucial role in a nationโ€™s technological progress. If we keep losing brilliant minds like this, we could face a serious skills shortage in the future. As the leader of the werewolf population on this continent, I must protect them.โ€

There was a trace of sorrow in his voice. โ€œDo you think an enemy nation is behind this?โ€ I asked him tentatively.

โ€œItโ€™s hard to say,โ€ he shook his head. โ€œSimilar cases have occurred abroad too, soโ€ฆโ€

I nodded slightly, understanding the implication. Every country valued high-ranking technology talent, and it was unlikely theyโ€™d be sacrificed so easily.

โ€œYou donโ€™t need to worry about this,โ€ Samson said, taking on an elderโ€™s tone as he ruffled my hair. โ€œJust focus on living freely.โ€

โ€œI always do,โ€ I replied, sidestepping his touch and giving him an indifferent glance.

Samson didnโ€™t seem surprised by my reaction. After a few final words of advice, he left with his men.

I headed straight homeโ€”or rather, to Benjaminโ€™s house. When I arrived, Mira and Loretta were already there. Benjamin stood up the moment he saw me. โ€œFrederick wonโ€™t back down easily. Iโ€™ll go deal with it.โ€

Benjamin smiled slightly, his eyes reassuring, then left. Hera looked displeased that he had barely approached her before rushing off. With everything going on, I hadnโ€™t spent much time with him lately. I took a moment to comfort her.

After pausing briefly, I stepped into the yard and got straight to the point. โ€œLoretta, did you go to the Physics Research Building this morning?โ€

โ€œI did,โ€ she replied with an innocent nod. โ€œThe assistant told me the professor wanted to see me, so I went. But I waited all morning and never saw him. Someone bumped into me, though.โ€

I was tense. โ€œWho was it?โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t get a good look,โ€ Loretta sounded frustrated. โ€œIt was too early, and I wasnโ€™t even fully awake yet.โ€

Claudioโ€™s expression shifted as realization dawned on him. โ€œDo you know that you were set up?โ€

Loretta blinked in confusion. โ€œWait, what? Did something happen at the research building? Was something stolen? Are they suspecting me?โ€

Growing anxious, she quickly added, โ€œI swear I donโ€™t know anything! I wasnโ€™t involved. My wolf has been in hibernation recently. How could I have done anything?โ€

โ€œTheft? If that were all, youโ€™d be lucky.โ€ Claudio pretended to be serious and frightened her. โ€œItโ€™s murder. Someone was killed at the research building. And right now, the police believe youโ€™re their prime suspect.โ€
