โThank you, Luna Hannah,โ Zoe said, her sincerity exceeding my expectations.
โThank you for choosing us as your pack,โ I replied, affecting an almost sickeningly sweet tone. Turning to her son, I asked, โTell me, how old are you, Adam?โ
Adam shyly held up four fingers.
Zoe smiled, running her fingers through Adamโs golden locks. โHeโs four years old,โ she said proudly. โHeโs also a bit shy around new people.โ
I smiled brightly at Adam. โThatโs all right. Itโs good to be a little cautious around strangers.โ
Turning back to Zoe, I continued, โWith your permission, Iโve prepared gifts for all the Packโs children in advance of the upcoming Lunar Festival, and Iโd like to give Adam his now. It might help him feel at home.โ
Zoe gestured with her hand. โBe my guest.โ
I reached into the supply bags, where Iโd hidden Adamโs gift from even Noahโs view. I produced a box encased in shiny red wrapping paper and handed it to Adam. The boy turned the gift over carefully, seemingly unsure what to do.
โGo ahead, sweetheart,โ Zoe encouraged. โOpen it.โ
Giving his mother one last look, Adam tore apart the wrapping paper, tossing it aside. His eyes widened at the sight of the Transformer Optimus Prime action figure. He looked at his mother again, then a wide smile spread across his face as he began jumping up and down.
โMommy, Mommy, look!โ he exclaimed, repeatedly jabbing his finger at the box.
โI know, I see,โ Zoe said, laughing with joy. โThatโs a very special gift. What do you say to Luna Hannah?โ
Adam set his new toy down and, surprisingly, rushed to hug me, burying his face in my dress. โThank you, Luna Hannah,โ he murmured.
I returned his hug. โYouโre welcome, Adam.โ
A chorus of โawwsโ erupted from the crowd. The paparazzi jostled for a picture of me with Adam and Zoe. To my secret delight, Noah was almost entirely forgotten.
Later that day, at home, I watched news videos of the Acceptance Ceremony.
โLuna Hannah has surpassed herself today with her warm reception of Zoe, Alpha Noahโs former fated mate, and her son, Adam,โ one news anchor declared. โSheโs shown remarkable grace and poise. I know I wouldnโt have handled the situation so tactfully.โ
โLuna Hannah has certainly proven herself worthy of her position today,โ her co-anchor added. โShe didnโt just give Zoe and her child the same supplies as the other refugees; she truly opened her arms and heart to them, greeting them like long-lost family. How many of us would have done that?โ
โAmidst Luna Hannahโs praiseworthy response, one wonders: why has Zoe returned to the Nightcrest Pack?โ the host of another show mused. โItโs highly unusual for a former Luna to join another pack. Zoe, as a Luna, was known for her honor and reputationโcould something have jeopardized both?โ
One political commentator delved into the profile of Drake, Zoeโs presumed ex-husband, speculating on the reason for Zoeโs sudden departure:
โDrake, nephew of the Luna Queen, was a notorious playboy before his marriage to Zoe. He likely never abandoned that lifestyle. Recently, he was spotted with international supermodel Amber.
โZoe may have finally had enough of his womanizing and left him to protect her image. Whether this will succeed or backfire remains to be seen. Few Lunas recover from divorcing their Alphasโฆโ
My phone vibrated, seemingly for the hundredth time that hour. It was Viona again. I couldnโt keep her waiting; she might think something had happened to me.
โHello?โ I answered.
โFinally!โ Viona exclaimed. โI was starting to worry.โ
I rolled my eyes. โYouโre such a drama queen sometimes. Whatโs up?โ
โWhatโs up? Itโs all over the news!โ
โWhat is?โ
โZoeโs back!โ
โYes, I know,โ I said calmly.
โArenโt you furious?โ
โNot exactly,โ I lied. โAre you?โ
โOf course! How could Noah let her return, after everything youโve done for him? After everything youโve sacrificed?โ
โViona, I donโt understand your concern.โ
โBullshit! They were fated mates, Hannah. You know what that means.โ
I forced a sigh, maintaining my calm faรงade. โYes, I know. Iโm not an ignorant teenager.โ
โThen why arenโt you more worried? Donโt you know what could happen now that sheโs back? That little bastard couldโโ
โHe could cheat on me, ruin my reputation, make a fool of me. I know.โ
Viona paused, processing my words.
โAnd yet youโre smiling and welcoming her and her child into the pack,โ she said, her tone bitter. โYouโre letting them walk all over you, as though you didnโt give up being an Alpha to become Noahโs Luna. As though you arenโtโฆโ
I knew what Viona was about to say: As though you arenโt mutilating yourself to appease him.
For a moment, I almost lost control. I quietly wiped away tears, took a deep breath, and spoke again.
โI have it under control, Viona,โ I assured her. โI know what Iโm doing.โ
โBut, sweetie,โ she said, her tone now sad and conciliatory, โare you prepared to be hurt?โ
โIโm not going to be hurt,โ I insisted. โIโve made a decision, and I wonโt come out of this disadvantaged.โ
I jumped as the front door opened, revealing Noahโs imposing figure. Scott followed close behind.
My brows furrowed. Noah only came home on our intimacy nights.
โI have to call you back.โ
Before Viona could reply, I hung up.
I watched Noah cross the living room, Scott at his side. Noah dropped his messenger bag on the couch and stood before me, tablet in hand. His brooding expression confirmed he knew of my decision.
I braced myself.
โI received an interesting email from the Alpha Council today,โ he said, glaring at me. He handed me the tablet. โIs there anything you want to tell me?โ
I didnโt bother to look at the tablet. I knew its contents. He wanted me to claim an error, but there wasnโt one.
I returned the tablet. Then, I squared my shoulders, lifted my chin defiantly, and met his gaze.
โYes, that is my divorce application.โ
