Chapter 6
Noah stared back, as if unable to comprehend my words. Scottโs gaze shifted between us, his expression neutral.
โExplain,โ Noah said simply.
I glanced at Scott for support, but he subtly shook his head. Now was not the time to reveal our alliance; I was on my own.
โTell me, Noah,โ I began, โdo you think our marriage needs to exist?โ
He didn't respond.
Sighing, I tucked my hair behind my ear, gathering my courage before continuing. โIโm tired of this marriage. Itโs all show, no substance.โ
Noah gaped, speechless. โAll show and no substance?โ he asked, hands at his sides. โAre you jealous of Zoe?โ
โNoah, this isnโt just about Zoeโโ
โWe both rejected each other,โ he interrupted, ignoring my statement. โWhether Zoe returned or not wouldnโt have affected our marriage.โ
โYou arenโt listening,โ I insisted. โZoe is a small part of the problem. Our marriage means nothing.โ
โIt means something to our people,โ he argued. โThey see us as a pillar of strength. It means something to the Alpha Council.โ
โIt means nothing to me, anymore.โ
He looked as though Iโd struck him. โWhere did you get these absurd ideas?โ
I opened my mouth to speak, then closed it. I couldn't tell him the truth; he'd think I was insane. I wouldn't mention my pregnancy either; it would only complicate things, and he might try to force me to stay if he knew I carried his heir. He wouldn't take my child.
โIโve been thinking about it for a while,โ I lied. โI knew you were keeping something from me, and that was the last straw.โ
He arched a brow. โWhat have I been keeping from you?โ
โDonโt act like you donโt know.โ
โI donโt know.โ
I rolled my eyes. If he wouldn't admit it, there was no point in pressing further.
He shook his head. โWhatever you think Iโve been keeping from you, I canโt and wonโt let you divorce me.โ
I crossed my arms. โYou wonโt let me?โ
โNo. Nor can I, considering the Packโs complex interests.โ
I knew heโd bring that up, but I wouldn't let him guilt me.
โThatโs not my problemโโ
โOf course, it is. Youโre the Nightcrest Packโs Luna. You may not have the same duties as I do, but youโre just as responsible for the Packโs well-being.โ
He stepped closer, wagging a finger. โAnd donโt forget, you initiated this marriage. You have no right to end it.โ
Frowning, I jumped to my feet, confronting him. โI did not โinitiateโ anything,โ I said. โAs youโve pointed out, it was a politically arranged marriage. Even if I had initiated it, that gives me the right to end it whenever I want.โ
โNot with all our obligations.โ
He snapped his fingers at Scott, who handed him a color-coded folder containing his upcoming events.
โHomeless fundraiser at the Moon Goddess temple, the Alpha golf tournament, the opening ceremony of Nightcrest University,โ he listed, snapping the folder shut, โall of which involve us attending together. Not to mention our application to host the Lunar Festival.โ
For a moment, I thought I saw desperation in his eyes.
โI cannot be without a Luna when the Alpha Council reviews us.โ
