Chapter 6

Noah stared back, as if unable to comprehend my words. Scottโ€™s gaze shifted between us, his expression neutral.

โ€œExplain,โ€ Noah said simply.

I glanced at Scott for support, but he subtly shook his head. Now was not the time to reveal our alliance; I was on my own.

โ€œTell me, Noah,โ€ I began, โ€œdo you think our marriage needs to exist?โ€

He didn't respond.

Sighing, I tucked my hair behind my ear, gathering my courage before continuing. โ€œIโ€™m tired of this marriage. Itโ€™s all show, no substance.โ€

Noah gaped, speechless. โ€œAll show and no substance?โ€ he asked, hands at his sides. โ€œAre you jealous of Zoe?โ€

โ€œNoah, this isnโ€™t just about Zoeโ€”โ€

โ€œWe both rejected each other,โ€ he interrupted, ignoring my statement. โ€œWhether Zoe returned or not wouldnโ€™t have affected our marriage.โ€

โ€œYou arenโ€™t listening,โ€ I insisted. โ€œZoe is a small part of the problem. Our marriage means nothing.โ€

โ€œIt means something to our people,โ€ he argued. โ€œThey see us as a pillar of strength. It means something to the Alpha Council.โ€

โ€œIt means nothing to me, anymore.โ€

He looked as though Iโ€™d struck him. โ€œWhere did you get these absurd ideas?โ€

I opened my mouth to speak, then closed it. I couldn't tell him the truth; he'd think I was insane. I wouldn't mention my pregnancy either; it would only complicate things, and he might try to force me to stay if he knew I carried his heir. He wouldn't take my child.

โ€œIโ€™ve been thinking about it for a while,โ€ I lied. โ€œI knew you were keeping something from me, and that was the last straw.โ€

He arched a brow. โ€œWhat have I been keeping from you?โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t act like you donโ€™t know.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know.โ€

I rolled my eyes. If he wouldn't admit it, there was no point in pressing further.

He shook his head. โ€œWhatever you think Iโ€™ve been keeping from you, I canโ€™t and wonโ€™t let you divorce me.โ€

I crossed my arms. โ€œYou wonโ€™t let me?โ€

โ€œNo. Nor can I, considering the Packโ€™s complex interests.โ€

I knew heโ€™d bring that up, but I wouldn't let him guilt me.

โ€œThatโ€™s not my problemโ€”โ€

โ€œOf course, it is. Youโ€™re the Nightcrest Packโ€™s Luna. You may not have the same duties as I do, but youโ€™re just as responsible for the Packโ€™s well-being.โ€

He stepped closer, wagging a finger. โ€œAnd donโ€™t forget, you initiated this marriage. You have no right to end it.โ€

Frowning, I jumped to my feet, confronting him. โ€œI did not โ€˜initiateโ€™ anything,โ€ I said. โ€œAs youโ€™ve pointed out, it was a politically arranged marriage. Even if I had initiated it, that gives me the right to end it whenever I want.โ€

โ€œNot with all our obligations.โ€

He snapped his fingers at Scott, who handed him a color-coded folder containing his upcoming events.

โ€œHomeless fundraiser at the Moon Goddess temple, the Alpha golf tournament, the opening ceremony of Nightcrest University,โ€ he listed, snapping the folder shut, โ€œall of which involve us attending together. Not to mention our application to host the Lunar Festival.โ€

For a moment, I thought I saw desperation in his eyes.

โ€œI cannot be without a Luna when the Alpha Council reviews us.โ€
