Chapter 249

“Hey, you’re being unreasonable!”

“Right? How dare she scold the others when she’s the culprit? I’ve never seen someone as outrageous as her!”

“Enough. Let’s report her to the police!”

The crowd, annoyed by Jane’s arrogance, pointed fingers at her.

“Shut up! All of you!” Hands on her waist, Jane yelled, “Do you know we’re the Nicholsons from Glenstead? Even your mayor shows us respect, let alone you worthless plebs! Make more fuss, and I’ll have you arrested!”

The accusations instantly ceased. An average citizen wouldn't want to anger the famed aristocratic Nicholson family.

“Mom, just ignore those peasants. Look at this. I’m hurt.” Dakota Nicholson pressed against a wound and winced.

“Are you hurt? Let me see!” Jane’s expression crumbled as she hurried to examine Dakota’s injury. “Gosh, it’s bleeding. This isn’t good.” Her face paled. Her eyes landed on Dustin. “Hey, you’re a doctor, aren’t you? Quickly, check my daughter! She’s hurt!” Jane looked so worried, one might have thought Dakota had a terminal illness.

“She’s fine. It’s just a scrape on her elbow.” Dustin glanced at the injury and looked away.

“What do you mean? A scrape?” Jane looked irritated. “My precious daughter has never been injured! But she has a huge wound now. Of course, we’ll have to treat it carefully. What if it gets infected?”

“If you’re worried about infection, buy a bandage at the pharmacy next door. If you keep dilly-dallying, the wound will heal itself before you get to it,” Dustin mocked. He’d never seen anyone as ridiculous as Jane, making such a fuss over a tiny wound.

“What did you say? How could you ignore my daughter’s injury when you’re a doctor? Are you even human, you…?” Jane was furious. No one had ever refused her requests since she married into the wealthy Nicholson family.

“I have to prioritize. This girl is fighting for her life. Your daughter’s wound is nothing compared to hers!” Dustin chided her.

“How dare you compare that peasant to my daughter?” Jane glared. “Dakota is a Nicholson—she’s important and precious! You cannot compare her to a commoner!”

“Yeah! She’s a nobody. If she dies today, it’s her wretched fate!” Dakota sneered. “Treat my wound! It’s an order. If I get a scar, you won’t get off the hook!”

“Are you even human? No one speaks that way!”

“That’s right. Is a life worth less than your minor scrape?” The indignant crowd offered their opinions.

“What now? Are you testing me? The audacity to talk back to the Nicholsons! Come here! Which one of you wants to be the hero?” Jane hissed maliciously as onlookers silently contained their rage at her insolence. Average citizens were helpless against the harassment and bullying of the rich.

“Madam, my daughter is critical. Please let her get treatment. Please!” The woman in white knelt, tears in her eyes.

“Hmph! I don’t care! My daughter must be treated first!” Jane refused to budge.

“Are you deaf? Did you hear my mother?” Dakota kicked Dustin but was infuriated by his lack of response. “So, you refuse to treat my wound. Fine! Don’t bother saving anyone today!” She approached the young girl and pulled out the gold needle.

With the needle removed, the girl bled profusely, her face paling.

“Hm?” Dustin frowned, spinning around with a deadly stare. “Do you know what you’re doing? You could kill someone by pulling out that needle without thinking!”

“So what? You can’t save anyone without my permission.” Dakota crossed her arms, bold and arrogant.

Jane echoed her attitude. “That’s right! If you don’t treat my daughter’s wound, you won’t save that useless commoner!”

“Please, please have mercy! Don’t make things difficult for the doctor! I beg you!” The woman in white pleaded, hitting her head on the ground. She couldn’t afford to anger the wealthy; she only wanted her daughter safe.

“Try that again, and I won’t go easy on you!” Dustin warned Dakota.

She scoffed. “Oh! You have guts, don’t you? Do you know who I am? How dare you speak to me like that? Did I tell you not to touch anything? Well, I’m going to do it anyway!” She moved to remove the needle again.

“Get lost!” Fuming, Dustin slapped her across the face. She yelped, flying ten feet, rolling on the ground. Her fair skin was red and swollen; she’d even lost some dental veneers.

“Shit! That doctor’s mad! How dare he slap a Nicholson?”

“Being hot-headed is one thing; offending the Nicholsons is another. He might suffer for it.” The crowd murmured, casting sympathetic glances at Dustin.

“H-how dare you hit me?” Dakota got up, dizzy and baffled. From a young age, she’d been treated like a princess. She’d never been slapped, let alone in public.

“So what? Don’t you deserve it for being rude?” Dustin’s expression was hostile.

“How dare you hit my daughter? I’m going to fight you!” Jane, recovering from the initial shock, launched an attack. He merely slapped her, and she collapsed. Mother and daughter lay sprawled on the ground.
