Chapter 29

Ronald cleared his throat, sat up straight, and continued, “Naomi also said this isn't the life she wanted. Since you'll be the one causing her to divorce, you'll obviously have to compensate her financially. If she's satisfied with the money, she won't bother you anymore. And to avoid future awkwardness, she won't discuss her past with you.”

Brendan’s heart sank. It sounded as if Ronald and Naomi were blaming him. In reality, Naomi had only said she would sign the divorce papers when ready. Ronald, however, seemed to have embellished her statement.

Seeing Brendan speechless, Ronald continued, “Brendan, Naomi has compromised a great deal over the years. Since you're so rich and capable, how about you be more generous with this divorce settlement? At least, if anyone brings this up in the future, they'll praise your generosity instead of remembering your infidelity.”

Ronald rambled on, “Besides, you're cheating with someone worse than Naomi. Don't you think she'll be embarrassed? You need to give her more money to compensate her feelings.”

Brendan stared at Ronald silently, wondering why his cousin was so eager for his divorce from Naomi.

Ronald, noticing Brendan’s silence, asked, “So? Brendan, how did I do? You've been trying to get divorced for two years. Now, I've helped you accomplish it!”

“Brilliant,” Brendan replied with a forced smile, his true feelings masked.

“So, about that compensation… you should think about it. After all, you've known Naomi for so long,” Ronald added.

“Of course,” Brendan responded.

However, Ronald sensed something was amiss. His cousin wasn't as happy as he expected. He looked at Brendan suspiciously as Brendan rhythmically tapped the table.

Brendan said, “Ronald, not only have you done a great job on this matter, but I’m also pleased with your work attitude and performance recently.”

Ronald was taken aback. Why the sudden shift to work? He quickly replied, “Thank you. I’ll keep up the good work.”

Brendan continued, “Our company is planning to aid in building fifty elementary schools in the mountains for charity. I think you'll be a great person to manage this project.”

Dumbfounded, Ronald stammered, “Bre… I mean, Mr. Ludwig…”

Brendan asked, “Do you have any issues with that?”

His gaze sent a chill down Ronald’s spine. He quickly shook his head. “No, nothing at all. Why would I?”

“Then you can depart with the group at 3:00 p.m. today,” Brendan stated.

“What? That soon?” Ronald thought he could at least buy some time to find a replacement, or at least wait until his cousin cooled off and changed his mind. Unfortunately, it was already noon; he wouldn't even have time to pack.

Brendan looked at Ronald’s distraught face and said, “To show our company’s charitable wish, I hope you will be present throughout the construction of all fifty elementary schools. The day all the schools are built will be the day you return.”

Ronald, on the verge of tears, wailed, “Brendan, is it because I asked for too much money? If so, you can reduce it. I’ll discuss this with Naomi! Fifty schools in the mountains… I'll be dead before they're completed!”
