Chapter 72

Naomi answered the phone and immediately scolded Ronald. “Ronald, are you out of your mind? If you keep bothering me, I’ll kick you out tomorrow!”

On the other end, Ronald sounded helpless. “Naomi, I just wanted to tell you not to sell me out to Brendan.”

Naomi hung up abruptly.

It would be nice if the cousins’ personalities could somehow balance each other out.

Brendan received a call from Jason shortly after leaving Yellowind Bay. Jason reported, “Mr. Martin has been away on a business trip for the past few days. He hasn’t been in touch with Ms. Goodwin. Everything seems normal regarding her whereabouts. She was at South Lake last night.”

Brendan responded indifferently and hung up. Naomi, he thought, never had anything good to say and was always full of lies. However, knowing her recent outburst was nonsense, he felt relieved. At least she hadn’t acted recklessly, suggesting she still cared about their marriage.

In the bedroom, Naomi called Dennis after hanging up on Ronald. She explained her thoughts, suggesting the project price remain unchanged, but the quality be improved.

Dennis considered her suggestion. “Naomi, why don’t you come back to the company and help me?”

“Dad, you’re still young. Let’s talk about this later.”

“Naomi, the legal profession is tough, especially handling only divorce cases. You might not succeed if you continue down this path. Please think about it.”

Naomi chuckled. “Dad, my career’s just begun! Don’t judge so hastily. I know what I’m doing.”

She knew her current firm and work weren't highly regarded, but she was young and had a long future.

After a few more words, Naomi ended the call. Feeling tired, she yawned. Just as she was about to rest, the bedroom door opened.

Naomi looked up and saw Brendan. She felt a mix of irritation and amusement.

She tossed her phone aside. “What do you want? It’s late. Aren’t you going to rest?”

Brendan removed his coat, tossing it onto a cabinet. Remembering Naomi’s earlier nonsense and deliberate attempts to upset him, he unbuttoned his shirt.

Before coming upstairs, Jennifer had spoken with him. She mentioned Naomi rarely came home late, except to visit her parents or for business trips. Jennifer praised Naomi as a good woman, noting that most women in her position would seek distractions elsewhere. She explained Naomi’s harsh words stemmed from discomfort and a need to vent frustration.

Jennifer’s words softened Brendan’s heart.

Brendan remained silent.

Naomi teased, “Still upset you didn’t get to check my phone?”

Naomi’s nonchalance met Brendan’s stern gaze. They stood close. Noticing his indifference, Naomi stifled a yawn and started to climb into bed.

Suddenly, Brendan wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her close. Before Naomi could react, he kissed her.
