Chapter 1173:
Louise fixed Elyse with a stern look. โIโm not a child anymore. Of course, I understand the horror of harboring romantic feelings for my half-brother.โ
Elyse recalled the unsettling scene she had just witnessed outside the study, sending shivers down her spine. Rubbing her neck, she inquired, โWhat about your feelings for Edward? Youโve always wanted to be with him, havenโt you? So why have you shifted your affections to Garret?โ
When Elyse mentioned Edward, Louiseโs expression grew even sadder. She took a bite of her apple and answered gloomily, โI donโt know.โ
After a pause, she continued, โIโm unsure about my feelings for Edward. It was Chesney who suggested I pursue him, claiming that if I married Edward, it would help him secure his rule.โ
Elyse was puzzled. โChesney is king yet, right?โ
Louise exhaled deeply. โHe believes heโll ascend the throne sooner or later and is preparing by securing close allies now.โ
Elyse pursed her lips. โChesney is ambitious, but Garret seems more capable to me.โ
Louise sighed. โItโs hard to admit, but Chesney doesnโt match up to Garret.โ
After a moment, Elyse joked, โMaybe youโre better suited to ascend the throne than Chesney.โ
Louise, caught off-guard mid-bite, responded, โYou think Iโd do better than Chesney?โ
โWhy not? Youโre humbler than Chesney and equally brave. You could ascend the throne,โ Elyse replied.
Louise chewed her apple. โI never thought about it like that.โ
โWell, maybe itโs something to consider. You never know,โ Elyse said, patting Louise on the shoulder.
Louise stiffened, then leaned back. โI never claimed to be compelling for the throne. Please donโt spur me on without thought.โ
Elyse laughed and changed the subject. โSo, between Garret and Edward, who do you really prefer?โ
Louise ate her apple in silence for a while before she softly said, โI donโt know.โ
Her tone lightened. โBut I do have a crush on Garret, and I have strong feelings for Edward as well.โ
Caught off-guard, Elyse asked, โOf the two, who do you prefer?โ
Louise touched her cheek thoughtfully and replied earnestly, โI think I hold them both in quite high regard.โ
โAt least youโre fair,โ Elyse said, unsure of what else to say.
She shifted the topic again. โGarret is, after all, your half-brother. Continuing to have feelings for him could lead to a massive scandal for the royal family, donโt you think?โ
