Chapter 508:

Jayden returned to the hospital, only to find Elyse had already eaten two breakfasts. Driscoll, seeing Jayden in his wheelchair, frowned. "Sir, we underestimated Mrs. Owen's appetite. A maid is bringing another breakfast."

Clive, pointing at himself with a rumbling stomach, said, "What about mine? Don't tell me I'm next on the starvation list!"

Driscoll chuckled. "Of course not, Mr. Yates. Your breakfast is next door. This way, please."

Clive followed with a grateful sigh; assisting Jayden the previous night had left him famished.

Once Driscoll and Clive were gone, the atmosphere shifted. Jayden and Elyse were alone. Jayden cleared his throat, attempting to mask his awkwardness. Maneuvering his wheelchair closer to the bed, he reached for Elyse's hand, but she quickly withdrew it, as if anticipating his touch.

"Your eyes are still shut," he said, blinking in surprise. "How do you know what I'm doing?"

Elyse remained silent, her eyes tightly closed, her disappointment palpable. Jayden sensed her resistance and felt lost. He could only watch her motionless form.

The silence stretched until Jayden, unable to bear it, spoke monotonously. "Last night, I interrogated the driver. My grandfather was the mastermind, just as I suspected."

Elyse's icy voice cut through his explanation. "Why tell me? It's not like I have a say in your affairs, do I?"

Jayden, barely above a whisper, confessed, "I visited him this morning, and things went badly. I'm cutting ties with the Owens."

Elyse's eyes snapped open. "So? You sever ties with your family, and that's not my concern. Deal with it. This doesn't involve me." Her anger was unmistakable. Jayden was confused. Why was she still furious after his honesty?

After a pause, he added, "My grandfather sees me as his enemy. It would be best if you distanced yourself from the Owens. They're volatile."

Elyse lashed out, hitting his shoulder. "Can't you hear me? You constantly treat me like an outsider. Don't assume I need updates just because I'm upset. We have no stake in this. Keep me out of it, and I'll stay out."

Her tone was commanding, her aura overpowering Jayden's. The fierceness in her voice and demeanor left him speechless. He'd never seen this side of her anger, and it chilled him.

Her outburst was followed by a wave of discomfort. Elyse clutched her stomach, her face contorted in pain.

Worry etched his face. "Are you alright? Should I call the doctor?"

Elyse could only nod weakly.

Jayden pressed the call button, and soon the room was filled with medical personnel. Clive and Driscoll, alerted by the commotion, rushed in from the next ward.

Learning the cause of Elyse's distress—her anger at Jayden—Driscoll spoke with unusual seriousness. "Sir, Mrs. Owen's pregnancy is still fragile due to yesterday's events. She needs rest and calmness. Please choose your words more carefully. Her emotional well-being is paramount."

Overwhelmed with guilt, Jayden couldn't defend himself. He tried to appease Elyse with gentle words, but her anger simmered, and her condition worsened.

Clive, munching on a croissant, his eyes blazing with disapproval, interjected, "Jayden, as your friend, I have to say this—you need to be more generous and understanding with Elyse. Upsetting her like this? What do you gain?"

Feeling cornered by Clive and Driscoll's criticism, Jayden finally responded. "I understand. I'll be mindful of her mood and avoid upsetting her."

Driscoll nodded curtly. "Happy wife, happy life. Do you want an unhappy life? Besides, if Elyse is unhappy, she'll leave you. You don't want to be single, do you?"

Jayden felt a knot tighten in his stomach. Driscoll's words echoed Clive's warning.

Defeated, he surrendered. "Alright. I get it."
