Chapter 535:
Brook left the office building and drove to the dressing room Corrie had reserved. Following a staff member's instructions, he entered the dressing room. The room was small, but various cosmetics were on display. It was Brook's first time in such a place, and after a suspicious sweep of his eyes around the room, he sat in the empty chair next to Corrie.
Corrie, having been there for half an hour and just finishing her makeup with the artist, heard the commotion. She opened her eyes to see Brook sitting beside her, curiously examining the cosmetics.
Rolling her eyes, Corrie remarked irritably, "I thought you had a stronger spine when you said you wouldn't join me for Grandpa's gathering. Yet, here you are."
Brook's eyes flashed with resentment. He had no choice but to come; his grandfather's gathering was exclusive. Only those acknowledged by Enzo were invited. Every young Owen was vying for an invitation, with Jayden being the only regular attendee. It was clear that, had Jayden not been disabled, he would have been the future leader of the Owen Group. But fate had intervened, leaving Jayden with no chance. Brook, however, saw an opportunity to surpass Jayden—an opportunity requiring his attendance.
Ignoring Corrie's sarcasm, Brook replied coolly, "Grandpa wouldn't have noticed you without me, right?"
Corrie scoffed, crossed her legs, and refused to respond. Her intention in marrying Brook was purely to access the Owen family's resources and connections. Once she secured independent employment with Enzo, she would sever ties with Brook. This thought lifted her spirits; she wouldn't let him ruin tonight.
Their makeup took two hours; afterward, they headed to Enzo's house. The parking lot was filled with luxury cars, each worth millions of dollars. Corrie even spotted several antique cars never before seen on the market—astronomically expensive vehicles. The Owen family's wealth and connections once again astonished her, strengthening her resolve to remain connected to them.
Corrie and Brook entered the house arm in arm. Corrie knew no one, but Brook did. He was thrilled to see powerful members of his family mingling, and he initially wanted to approach each one, greet them, and exchange business cards to ensure he was remembered. However, he realized this would be too forward. Instead, he stood in a corner with Corrie, hesitant to act.
After a few minutes, Enzo slowly approached, using a cane. His hair was silver, but his face was vigorous, his eyes sharp. He surveyed the twelve guests—the core of the Owen clan, ensuring its continued prosperity. Enzo was clearly pleased with this loyal and capable group he had personally chosen.
He cleared his throat and said, "Everyone, I've gathered you today for one reason: I haven't seen you all in a while, and I wanted to share a meal before... while I'm still here."
Some guests' faces fell. "Enzo, why say something so ominous? It's upsetting." "Exactly, you're still hale and hearty! You have many years ahead of you!"
A displeased expression crossed Enzo's face. He shook his head. "I'm old. My body isn't as strong as it used to be. I'm aware of that." After a pause, he added, "Besides enjoying a meal, I also want to discuss Jayden's matter."
