Chapter 582:
After hanging up the phone, Brook slept for another two hours before his assistant called him to attend to some work matters. Upon waking, he listened to the assistant's report and casually inquired, "Has any gossip been circulating in the company?"
The assistant, seeming taken aback, nodded. "Yes, sir. It's about Jayden Owen and the chairman."
Brook again asked casually, "And what are they saying?"
"They're saying the chairman is cold-blooded and unsympathetic, and that he nearly killed Jayden," the assistant replied cautiously. "Should I find out who started the rumor?"
Brook shook his head dismissively. "No need to intervene. Let it spread."
The assistant nodded, then ventured, "Sir, did the chairman really almost kill Jayden? Wasn't he quite fond of him before?"
Without looking up, Brook cautioned, "Don't delve too deeply. You don't want to lose your job."
The assistant fell silent, awkwardly.
"Alright, you may attend to your other duties," Brook said, dismissing the assistant.
During his workday, Brook received several messages from Corrie, urging him to visit his grandfather as soon as possible. Brook remained calm, unhurried by Corrie's urgency. He decided to visit his grandfather after finishing work.
However, Corrie's patience wore thin. At one o'clock in the afternoon, she arrived at the Owen Group building and walked into Brook's office in her high heels.
Looking up and noticing Corrie, Brook returned to his document.
Corrie's lips twitched. Offering an insincere smile, she said, "You're not even eager for a promotion. Are you pretending to be indifferent to fame and fortune?"
Without lifting his gaze, Brook replied, "You must be joking. I'm simply busy with work."
Corrie sneered, rolling her eyes. "Come see your grandfather with me now. I'll return your lover to you."
Brook's hand, which was twirling his pen, froze for two seconds before resuming its motion.
Casually, he replied, "You needn't return her. I'm tired of her."
"Oh? Are you serious?" Corrie shot him an inquiring glance, hoping to read his expression, but he ignored her.
Unwilling to give up, she persisted, "Jennie misses you every day. She's crying, hoping you'll find her soon and take her home." Pausing for effect, she asked with a faint smile, "So you don't want her anymore?"
"She was merely a plaything, a way to pass the time. Now that you've taken her away, I have reason to find a new one," Brook replied, raising his eyes to smile at Corrie. "You didn't think I'd be deeply in love with an ordinary girl like her, did you?"
Corrie discerned no attachment from Brook towards Jennie, worsening her mood. She knew men couldn't be trusted; they always lied about love. She had thought she could use Jennie to control Brook, but it seemed the girl was useless after all.
Frustrated, she asked, "So when are you planning to meet your grandfather? Don't tell me you're not going today."
"I'll go when I've finished my work," Brook replied calmly.
Corrie sneered, sat on the sofa, crossing her arms and fixing her eyes on him. She would wait to see how long he would procrastinate.
Observing Corrie's patient vigil, Brook further decreased his pace. By the time he completed his tasks, it was the end of the workday. He picked up a document, tucked it into his briefcase, and looked over at the sprawled, drowsy Corrie on the sofa. "Let's go see my grandfather," he said.
Startled awake, Corrie quickly composed herself and followed him out of the office.
It was already dinnertime when they arrived at Enzo's residence.
Seeing them, Enzo greeted them with surprise, "You're here for dinner, are you?"
Corrie felt embarrassed and struggled for words, but Brook interjected calmly, "We thought we'd join you for a meal. No particular reason."
Enzo smiled and instructed the cooks to prepare extra food. Before the dishes arrived, the three gathered in the study.
Seated, Enzo regarded them both. "I understand you've completed the mission. Well done, both of you."
