Chapter 583:
Hearing Enzo’s words, Corrie was filled with excitement. She craved his approval more than anything.
Taking a deep breath, she exclaimed eagerly, “Mr. Owen, this is the first time I’ve completed your task independently. It was challenging, but I’m glad I met your expectations.”
Enzo nodded briefly, then turned his attention to Brook, who had been silent.
He clasped his cane and asked softly, like a caring elder, “And you? Why did you miss the opportunity to kill Jayden?”
Corrie glanced at Brook. She knew concealing this from Enzo was impossible. Now that he knew Brook had spared Jayden, she didn't want Brook's lapse to overshadow her accomplishment. If it were disregarded, all her efforts would be wasted.
Corrie lowered her gaze, her eyes betraying restlessness and impatience. She vowed never to partner with Brook, this unreliable man, on Enzo’s missions again.
Brook met Enzo’s gaze and spoke, "If I killed Jayden, have you considered the repercussions?"
Enzo scoffed. “Repercussions? What repercussions? Removing a threat to our clan ensures the stability of our century-old business.”
Brook shook his head. “Are you aware of the dissent within the clan because of Jayden?”
Enzo knew of the murmurs but dismissed them with disdain. Those dissenters were parasites clinging to his legacy. They couldn't comprehend his responsibilities as clan leader. As long as he remained in charge, he would safeguard the clan's interests.
“Pay them no heed. They don't understand my intentions. If Jayden were compliant, he wouldn’t be dead,” he stated flatly, showing no remorse.
Brook took a breath. “Now some oppose your leadership because of this. Considering your reputation, I can't let you be seen harming your grandson.”
Enzo chuckled. “So you’re looking out for me? I should thank you?”
Brook bowed respectfully. “It’s my duty to protect your reputation. Your actions yesterday were too conspicuous. Many know what happened. Killing Jayden now is unwise.”
Enzo pondered this. “Your suggestion has merit. What else do you propose?”
Brook offered a serious suggestion. “Find a secluded place and handle Jayden discreetly. If we manage this without discovery, no one will connect his disappearance to you.”
Enzo nodded approvingly. He stood and placed a hand on Brook’s shoulder. “You’re thoughtful. I acted rashly. I’m fortunate to have you, Brook.”
Flattered, Brook scratched his head.
“Let’s have dinner. I’m reaching an age where company is welcome,” Enzo said, slowly making his way to the dining room.
Corrie remained, observing Brook with newfound respect. “I underestimated you. You’re not as timid as I thought. You’re quite cruel. I believed you spared Jayden out of conscience.”
Brook glanced at her calmly. “I’m much kinder than you. Your own actions have been ruthless.”
Corrie smiled, aware he referred to Elyse’s miscarriage.
“This was Enzo’s directive. I had no choice. If Elyse blames anyone, it should be him,” she stated.
Brook scrutinized Corrie. “Would any man truly desire a woman as vicious as you?”
