Chapter 584:
Brook's words stung Corrie. Seizing her handbag, she threw it at him.
Brook caught it deftly, a smirk on his face. "Oh, did I strike a nerve? No man wants a vicious woman."
Corrie laughed mockingly. "Like? Why would I need a man's approval? If he offers nothing of value, why should his feelings matter?"
Brook calmly brushed off her hand, wiping his own with a tissue, his eyes full of disdain. "Since you're so independent, I wish you all the best."
Stung by his dismissal, Corrie clenched her fists as he walked away. She took a deep breath, trying to steady herself. "It doesn't matter, Corrie," she whispered. "You haven't done anything wrong. In our world, everything's about gain. True virtue is a luxury. We do what we must to survive. You're doing just fine."
Calmer now, Corrie smiled and left the study. Dinner was being served in the dining room. She settled at the table and began eating with Enzo.
Midway through, Enzo looked at Brook and Corrie. "How are things? You've been together two months. When's the wedding?"
Caught off guard, Corrie glanced at Brook, unsure of Enzo's intentions. Was he pushing for a wedding, or merely testing their relationship?
Brook replied, "Corrie and I are taking our time. Two months is nothing. Besides, I've been swamped with work. Marriage isn't something I'm rushing into."
Enzo nodded. "You should consider moving things along, though. Neither of you is getting any younger. Don't make Corrie wait too long."
Brook agreed. "Alright."
After dinner, Enzo urged them to leave.
In the car, Corrie snapped, "I'll never marry you. A man like you doesn't deserve me. I'd choose someone else from your clan."
Brook, his eyelids heavy, remained unfazed. "Fine. Go ahead. Just stop haunting me. I have no interest in you."
Corrie scoffed. "You're just saying that because you're impotent."
Brook slammed on the brakes. Corrie's face drained of color as they neared a cliff edge.
"Are you out of your mind? Can you even drive?" she cried.
Brook glanced at her coldly. "If you dislike me so much, you shouldn't be in my car."
Corrie sneered. "I merely said you're impotent. Did that strike a nerve? You aren't impotent, are you?"
"Are you even a woman?" Brook retorted. "You fail to capture anyone's interest, yet you aspire to charm a man from my clan? Do you think you're alluring?"
Fury surged through Corrie, but Brook opened the door. "Either stay quiet or leave."
The dark road reminded Corrie of a chilling night two days earlier, waiting in a cemetery for rescue. She shuddered, closed the door, and remained silent.
Brook scoffed, locked the doors, and drove downtown. He stopped and let Corrie out. Seething, she called a taxi, but then changed her destination. Brook thought he was clever? She would prepare a "surprise" for him—a lesson in humility.
