Chapter 608:
Elyse stared impassively at Glenda's lifeless body. Despite Glenda's cruelty, Elyse acknowledged her dedication to Mabel. However, she felt no sympathy. Turning away, Elyse said, "Mabel Lloyd is out of town. I heard she was selling designer handbags in an antique store just two days ago. It seems Glenda set her up well."
Morgan smiled. "So what? Mabel Lloyd has caused enough trouble. Even if she changes her name, her creditors will find her."
Elyse agreed. "We'll see how long she can run."
Morgan whispered, "Leave her to me. I don't want to get your hands dirty."
Elyse was surprised. "Huh?"
"Your hands are for playing the violin," Morgan explained earnestly. She wanted Elyse to remain untainted.
Elyse was confused. "I don't think I'll get blood on my hands. Mabel Lloyd is foolish; she'll self-destruct before I need to act."
Morgan looked taken aback. "Really?"
Elyse nodded. "Just wait and see. She had every advantage but squandered them, inheriting her parents' lawless streak."
A police officer approached to escort them to the station. While Morgan gave her statement, Elyse went to the lobby for water. There, she encountered the handcuffed Lanny. His irritation was palpable. He stopped her, saying, "Elyse Lloyd, I never thought I'd lose to you. You're far cleverer than your father."
Elyse calmly sipped her water. "I'm not cleverer. He simply didn't anticipate how despicable you could be. You killed him while he was vulnerable, in a coma." She looked at him coldly. "Otherwise, how could a nobody like you have taken everything from him?"
Lanny laughed heartily, then said arrogantly, "I regret not killing you when you were young. I should have sent your whole family to hell."
Elyse replied lightly, "What a shame! Keeping me alive was like setting a time bomb. I was bound to uncover the truth."
Lanny forced a smile. "Are you saying my mistake led to this?"
"Perhaps," Elyse grinned. "My dear Uncle Lanny, you've enjoyed the riches for years. It's time to give them back. I hope you rot in prison."
Lanny clenched his teeth, questioning his defeat. He had been bested by Rickey's daughter. Despite his reluctance, he clung to the belief that he could somehow reverse his fortunes. After all, he'd only accidentally killed Glenda, his wife. He wouldn't be charged, he reasoned; his wife wouldn't press charges.
He pleaded with the officers, "Wait! I can explain! I'm innocent! Don't arrest me! Let me go!"
His pleas were ignored. They escorted him to a detention room. His release seemed unlikely.
Elyse watched, feeling relief. Lanny, the architect of her family's ruin, was finally incapacitated.
Morgan emerged from giving her statement and found Elyse standing pensively in the lobby. Unaware of the encounter with Lanny, she asked, "What are you thinking?"
Elyse replied thoughtfully, "The two who murdered my parents have been punished. Now, should I lay my parents' ashes to rest, and let them find peace?"
