Chapter 629:
Brook grimaced at the bitterness of his coffee, even after adding three sugars. Breaking the tense silence, he asked, โHow is your health? Have you fully recovered?โ
Elyseโs sharp reply cut through the air: โAre you asking if I can still have children?โ
Brook shook his head earnestly. โIโm not that cruel.โ
A faint sneer flickered across Elyseโs face, but she remained silent. Undeterred, Brook reminisced, โYouโve changed so much. You used to be so gentle and kind.โ
Elyse listened, remembering her former selfโmore accommodating, softer. But that gentleness hadnโt shielded her from her deepest loss; she hadnโt been able to protect her own child.
โPeople change based on their experiences, donโt they?โ Elyse remarked sadly.
Brook nodded slowly. โYes, they do. To not change is to stagnate, to become almost machine-like.โ
As they spoke, Eva, buzzing with excitement, led Jayden and Mia toward them. โThatโs right,โ Eva chirped, โI brought Mr. Owen to see Mrs. Owen.โ
Mia rolled her eyes, unimpressed. A manโs visit was hardly scandalous.
Elyse, caught off guard, addressed Jayden. โWould you like to join us?โ
Jaydenโs gaze was icy. After a tense moment, he asked bluntly, โAre you here looking for trouble?โ
Brook shrugged casually. โIโm here on behalf of Grandpa. We need to discuss something.โ
Jaydenโs voice was cool and detached. โIs there really anything left to discuss between me and Enzo?โ
Standing, Brook attempted to defuse the tension. โIโm merely the messenger. Donโt shoot the messenger. Iโll deliver my message, and then you can do as you wish.โ
Motioning toward the elevator, Brook suggested, โLetโs talk in your office.โ
Jaydenโs reluctance was clear. Elyse interjected, โItโs worth listening. You might learn something about Enzoโs plans. Ignorance is not bliss.โ
Taking a deep breath, Jayden agreed, โAlright, Iโll hear him out.โ
With a solemn expression, Jayden followed Brook to the elevator.
Once they were gone, Elyse checked her phone, then tossed it onto the table, addressing Eva with a wry smile. โThings didnโt unfold as youโd hoped, did they, Miss Prescott?โ
Caught off guard, Evaโs face tensed, and she glanced helplessly at Mia, who feigned ignorance, keeping her head down.
Eva stammered a justification: โI was just concerned for you, Mrs. Owen. That man didnโt seem trustworthy, so I thought it best to alert Mr. Owen.โ
Elyse raised an eyebrow. โShould I be thanking you then?โ
โNo, thatโs not necessary,โ Eva replied awkwardly.
Elyse tapped her fingers on the table twice; each tap felt like a hammer blow to Evaโs heart. Overwhelmed, Eva couldnโt meet Elyseโs gaze.
After a tense pause, Elyse addressed Mia. โYou need to better manage your team. Iโm not sure how Jayden will react.โ
โI understand, Mrs. Owen,โ Mia responded anxiously. Elyseโs demeanor reminded her of Jaydenโs former strict and authoritative presence. Jayden had softened considerably over time, becoming more lenient and approachable. Now, Elyse seemed to embody his former sternness.
With nothing more to say, Elyse left for Jaydenโs office.
Once Elyse had gone, Mia exhaled deeply and whispered, โHas Mr. Owen become more temperate because of his wifeโs influence?โ
