Chapter 629:

Brook grimaced at the bitterness of his coffee, even after adding three sugars. Breaking the tense silence, he asked, โ€œHow is your health? Have you fully recovered?โ€

Elyseโ€™s sharp reply cut through the air: โ€œAre you asking if I can still have children?โ€

Brook shook his head earnestly. โ€œIโ€™m not that cruel.โ€

A faint sneer flickered across Elyseโ€™s face, but she remained silent. Undeterred, Brook reminisced, โ€œYouโ€™ve changed so much. You used to be so gentle and kind.โ€

Elyse listened, remembering her former selfโ€”more accommodating, softer. But that gentleness hadnโ€™t shielded her from her deepest loss; she hadnโ€™t been able to protect her own child.

โ€œPeople change based on their experiences, donโ€™t they?โ€ Elyse remarked sadly.

Brook nodded slowly. โ€œYes, they do. To not change is to stagnate, to become almost machine-like.โ€

As they spoke, Eva, buzzing with excitement, led Jayden and Mia toward them. โ€œThatโ€™s right,โ€ Eva chirped, โ€œI brought Mr. Owen to see Mrs. Owen.โ€

Mia rolled her eyes, unimpressed. A manโ€™s visit was hardly scandalous.

Elyse, caught off guard, addressed Jayden. โ€œWould you like to join us?โ€

Jaydenโ€™s gaze was icy. After a tense moment, he asked bluntly, โ€œAre you here looking for trouble?โ€

Brook shrugged casually. โ€œIโ€™m here on behalf of Grandpa. We need to discuss something.โ€

Jaydenโ€™s voice was cool and detached. โ€œIs there really anything left to discuss between me and Enzo?โ€

Standing, Brook attempted to defuse the tension. โ€œIโ€™m merely the messenger. Donโ€™t shoot the messenger. Iโ€™ll deliver my message, and then you can do as you wish.โ€

Motioning toward the elevator, Brook suggested, โ€œLetโ€™s talk in your office.โ€

Jaydenโ€™s reluctance was clear. Elyse interjected, โ€œItโ€™s worth listening. You might learn something about Enzoโ€™s plans. Ignorance is not bliss.โ€

Taking a deep breath, Jayden agreed, โ€œAlright, Iโ€™ll hear him out.โ€

With a solemn expression, Jayden followed Brook to the elevator.

Once they were gone, Elyse checked her phone, then tossed it onto the table, addressing Eva with a wry smile. โ€œThings didnโ€™t unfold as youโ€™d hoped, did they, Miss Prescott?โ€

Caught off guard, Evaโ€™s face tensed, and she glanced helplessly at Mia, who feigned ignorance, keeping her head down.

Eva stammered a justification: โ€œI was just concerned for you, Mrs. Owen. That man didnโ€™t seem trustworthy, so I thought it best to alert Mr. Owen.โ€

Elyse raised an eyebrow. โ€œShould I be thanking you then?โ€

โ€œNo, thatโ€™s not necessary,โ€ Eva replied awkwardly.

Elyse tapped her fingers on the table twice; each tap felt like a hammer blow to Evaโ€™s heart. Overwhelmed, Eva couldnโ€™t meet Elyseโ€™s gaze.

After a tense pause, Elyse addressed Mia. โ€œYou need to better manage your team. Iโ€™m not sure how Jayden will react.โ€

โ€œI understand, Mrs. Owen,โ€ Mia responded anxiously. Elyseโ€™s demeanor reminded her of Jaydenโ€™s former strict and authoritative presence. Jayden had softened considerably over time, becoming more lenient and approachable. Now, Elyse seemed to embody his former sternness.

With nothing more to say, Elyse left for Jaydenโ€™s office.

Once Elyse had gone, Mia exhaled deeply and whispered, โ€œHas Mr. Owen become more temperate because of his wifeโ€™s influence?โ€
