Chapter 628:
Elyse glanced up and saw Eva standing there. Slightly taken aback, Elyse quickly glanced at Eva before returning her attention elsewhere.
Eva, stung by Elyseโs cold response, was clearly in a bad mood. Maintaining her composure, she said, โIโm sorry, Mrs. Owen. I just want to explain again that what happened was purely an accident.โ
Elyse, propped up on one hand, was engrossed in her phone. Just ten minutes earlier, she had been with Jayden. The bitter taste lingered in her mouth, and her throat felt scratchy. She was in no mood for conversation.
Evaโs words only annoyed Elyse further. With an impatient gesture, she dismissed Eva.
Noticing Elyseโs frosty demeanor and nervously darting eyes, Eva realized the mild-mannered woman sheโd perceived was sharper than sheโd anticipated. Deciding to change tactics, Eva softened her approach.
Seeing Eva still hadn't left, Elyse's irritation grew. โWhat exactly are you still doing here?โ
Eva, with a pitiful tone, replied, โMia told me to apologize to you and Mr. Owen, or she wouldnโt let me back into the office and would push through my resignation.โ
Elyseโs expression hardened. โDo you really think playing the victim will work on me?โ
Eva, lowering her gaze submissively, said, โOf course not. I never meant it that way.โ
Catching the sly glint in Evaโs eyes, Elyse smiled slightly. โSorry, but I have no intention of forgiving you. Iโm not here to fix your mess. You need to handle your own problems.โ
Eva, overacting, pleaded, โMrs. Owen, youโre so understanding. Please, could you speak to Mr. Owen and ask him not to fire me?โ
Rubbing her temples, Elyse felt Eva was missing the point. She wasn't buying the act and had no intention of helping her.
Just then, a waiter brought Elyseโs coffee. She took a sip, the rich aroma washing away the lingering bitterness.
โMiss Prescott,โ Elyse began, her tone firm, โI know you have feelings for my husband. The fact that I havenโt already dismissed you should be seen as a chance. But instead, you seem to think you can push me around.โ
Setting down her cup, Elyse fixed her gaze on Eva, who visibly paled. โFrankly, I wouldnโt mind making it public knowledge that youโve been trying to seduce my husband.โ
Eva, struggling to maintain her composure, offered a strained smile. โMrs. Owen, youโve got it all wrong. I havenโt done anything of the sort. Please, donโt spread false accusations.โ
Seeing Evaโs stubborn denial, Elyse remained unruffled. โWhether youโve done it or not is irrelevant. I can fire anyone I please.โ
Evaโs expression changed as she finally realized Elyse wasnโt to be trifled with. She had mistaken Elyseโs quiet demeanor for weakness.
In truth, Elyse had seen through Evaโs intentions long ago but had chosen not to confront her openly, demonstrating restraint and respect. Had Elyse acted differently, Eva would likely have been fired already.
With her head bowed, Eva anxiously apologized, โIโm so sorry. I didnโt mean to cause trouble. Mrs. Owen, please, just give me one more chance.โ
Elyse said impatiently, โYou should leave. The company has its own rules.โ
Just as Elyse finished speaking, a familiar voice called from behind her.
โItโs been a while. Youโve really toughened up.โ
Elyse turned, suspicion rising, and saw Brook. Her mood darkened. Gazing at Brook, she felt transported back to the day she lost her child.
Eva, unfamiliar with Brook, sensed he wasn't ordinary, judging by his sharp suit.
Seeing Elyseโs reaction, Brook realized he had startled her. He cleared his throat and turned to Eva, who was still lingering. โYou should probably leave. Elyse and I need to talk. Donโt stick around.โ
Elyse remained silent, clearly agreeing.
Observing the exchange, Eva suspected a deeper relationship between Elyse and Brook. She decided to inform Jayden upstairs.
A few minutes later, Elyse took another sip of coffee and inquired, โWhat brings you to Bayzee Group? Youโre not here to cause trouble for Jayden, are you?โ
Brook, sitting opposite, holding his coffee, calmly assured her, โRest assured, my grandfather wonโt be making any moves for now. You two are safe.โ
Upon hearing this, Elyse sneered. โShould I thank you and Enzo for refraining from attacking us again?โ
Taking a sip of his coffee, Brook replied, โSome things are out of my hands. I know you despise me, but thereโs no need to flaunt it. I feel the sting too.โ
Elyse laughed scornfully. โFeel the sting? I donโt give a damn! Have you forgotten that Jayden and I have suffered enough?โ
