Chapter 642:
Jaydenโs fingers tightened around Elyseโs chin, forcing a wince. Tears welled in her eyes as she struggled, staring into his deep eyes. โElyse,โ his voice was cold and menacing, โbut I think this is thriving, exceptional, even. Donโt you dare think about leaving me.โ
Elyseโs lip curled. โYou call this control thriving? Have we ever been equal, Jayden? Or am I not worthy of being your equal?โ
Confusion flickered across Jaydenโs face. โWhat are you talking about? Iโve never belittled you.โ He released her, sighing deeply. โOkay, okay. Maybe I didnโt explain myself properly after our fight yesterday. Let me shower. Iโll come out and explain everything.โ
Elyse remained silent, her eyes downcast, lips tight.
As Jayden undressed, his voice echoed. โLater, we can look at houses you might like. Just point them out, and Iโll get one for you. Then youโll finally have a place of your own.โ
Turning to Elyse, he saw tears streaming down her cheeks. He moved close, wiping them gently, his tone softening. โI promise to fulfill every desire you have. Just donโt think about leaving, okay?โ
Exhausted, Elyse avoided his gaze. โIโm tired. Iโm going to bed.โ
โIโll join you after I shower,โ Jayden said, heading towards the bathroom.
Elyse trudged to the bed, collapsing. Almost instantly, she drifted to sleep.
When Jayden emerged from the shower, Elyse was asleep. Later that afternoon, she woke and went downstairs.
Driscoll greeted her warmly. โIโll have the chef prepare something for you. Also, take a look at these.โ He handed her a thick stack of brochures.
Curiously, Elyse asked, โWhat are these?โ
โProperties that match all your criteria,โ Driscoll explained. โPrime investment opportunities in desirable locations.โ
Elyse chuckled softly, a hint of irony in her voice. โDoes he really think I need a house?โ
She flipped through the pages absentmindedly and set them aside. โI donโt need any of these. You can put them away.โ
Driscoll looked puzzled. โBut why?โ
Elyse sighed, her voice weary. โJust let Jayden know Iโm not interested in the houses.โ
Driscoll, taken aback, obliged, tucking the brochures away and excusing himself.
Finishing her meal in silence, Elyse retreated to her room. Retrieving her phone, she dialed Pearceโs number and arranged to meet him.
After he confirmed, she changed and set out.
At their meeting spot, Pearce waited. Sitting across from him, she cut to the chase. โI want a divorce.โ
Pearceโs smile hardened. โYouโve finally seen the light! Leaving that piece of shit was the best decision you could make!โ
Elyse frowned. โItโs not what you think.โ
โIt doesnโt matter. What matters is youโre leaving Jayden,โ Pearce said with satisfaction. Jayden had never been his favorite, and Elyseโs marriage to him had always troubled Pearce.
โIโll have my lawyer draw up the papers. He will have to compensate you handsomely,โ Pearce insisted eagerly.
Elyse shook her head. โThatโs not necessary. I donโt want anything from him.โ
She had lived at Jaydenโs place for a long time, grateful for the time sheโd been allowed to stay. Pearceโs jaw tightened.
โElyse, this isnโt about him. You deserve whatโs rightfully yours. Donโt be too considerate towards him in a divorce.โ
Elyseโs wry smile revealed her true intentions. She wasnโt being considerate; she simply had no need for material possessions.
Pearceโs excitement mounted, and he swiftly contacted his lawyer to initiate the divorce proceedings.
She hadnโt confided in Pearce about her lingering doubts. Was leaving truly the right choice? Despite the issues, she still loved Jayden deeply, but the gap between them seemed insurmountable, and Jayden remained oblivious to his faults.
After a long silence, Elyse finally spoke, her voice hesitant. โMaybe itโs best if weโฆ take some time apart.โ
At that moment, Jayden entered the room, his presence commanding. โIs it because of him that you want a divorce from me?โ
