Chapter 656:

Lowell turned to Shaun, a hint of amusement in his smile. โ€œShaun, my sister said you needed to speak with me. What is it?โ€

Shaun nodded firmly. โ€œThis isnโ€™t the right place. Letโ€™s find somewhere more private.โ€

โ€œMy office will do.โ€ Lowell looked at Jayden and Elyse. โ€œYou two should come as well.โ€

Elyse and Jayden followed Lowell to the elevator without objection.

In Lowellโ€™s office, he gestured at the paperwork piled on his desk. โ€œApologies, I just took over the company, and as you can see, thereโ€™s a backlog.โ€

Elyse settled onto the sofa after surveying the office. โ€œMr. Ruiz,โ€ she said directly, โ€œback in Watscar, you met Tracy alone, didnโ€™t you? You even dropped her off at my place.โ€

Lowell was surprised by her directness. His expression shifted before he nodded. โ€œYes, I met Tracy and helped her.โ€

Elyse leaned forward, her smile widening. โ€œAnd during this help, did you ask for anything in return? Itโ€™s well known you disliked Tracy, even challenging her to a car race to end your marriage.โ€

Lowell paused, then admitted, โ€œYes, I wasnโ€™t fond of her.โ€

โ€œSo, what was your price for helping?โ€ Elyse pressed.

Lowellโ€™s face darkened. โ€œAre you treating me like a criminal? I helped Tracy once, and now youโ€™re grilling me?โ€

Noticing Lowellโ€™s anger, Elyse replied with a faint smile. โ€œConsidering your and your sisterโ€™s reputations, itโ€™s hard to see you as good people.โ€

Lowellโ€™s expression chilled. โ€œIโ€™m not sure what Iโ€™ve done to offend you, but youโ€™re not the police. You have no right to question me.โ€

Undeterred, Elyse continued, โ€œIf youโ€™re avoiding such a simple question, let me ask directly. Did you fabricate the story of Tracyโ€™s suicide at sea? Or are you the killer?โ€

Lowellโ€™s demeanor became even more forbidding. Jayden restrained him; otherwise, he might have lunged at Elyse.

Watching Lowellโ€™s restraint, Elyse realized something: a truly innocent person wouldnโ€™t remain silent under false accusations. His reluctance spoke volumes. He couldnโ€™t produce a believable alibi.

Although increasingly convinced Lowell and Dolores were responsible for Tracyโ€™s death, Elyse knew she couldnโ€™t get them arrested. Nearly two weeks had passed since Tracyโ€™s alleged suicide; any missing evidence would be gone.

Her trip to Liverton was about uncovering the truth and identifying the culprits. With her suspicions confirmed, staying in Liverton seemed pointless.

Shaun frowned. โ€œEven if you doubt Lowell, this isnโ€™t the right way to confront him. Youโ€™re treating him like heโ€™s already guilty.โ€

Elyse ignored Shaun. Her voice was steady. โ€œIโ€™m convinced Lowell and Dolores are behind the murder. Howeverโ€ฆโ€

She paused, then addressed Lowell. โ€œThereโ€™s no remaining evidence, is there? With the time thatโ€™s passed, any proof you took Tracy to Liverton and killed her would be gone, wouldnโ€™t it?โ€

Lowell remained silent, his gaze unwavering. . . .
