Chapter 656:
Lowell turned to Shaun, a hint of amusement in his smile. โShaun, my sister said you needed to speak with me. What is it?โ
Shaun nodded firmly. โThis isnโt the right place. Letโs find somewhere more private.โ
โMy office will do.โ Lowell looked at Jayden and Elyse. โYou two should come as well.โ
Elyse and Jayden followed Lowell to the elevator without objection.
In Lowellโs office, he gestured at the paperwork piled on his desk. โApologies, I just took over the company, and as you can see, thereโs a backlog.โ
Elyse settled onto the sofa after surveying the office. โMr. Ruiz,โ she said directly, โback in Watscar, you met Tracy alone, didnโt you? You even dropped her off at my place.โ
Lowell was surprised by her directness. His expression shifted before he nodded. โYes, I met Tracy and helped her.โ
Elyse leaned forward, her smile widening. โAnd during this help, did you ask for anything in return? Itโs well known you disliked Tracy, even challenging her to a car race to end your marriage.โ
Lowell paused, then admitted, โYes, I wasnโt fond of her.โ
โSo, what was your price for helping?โ Elyse pressed.
Lowellโs face darkened. โAre you treating me like a criminal? I helped Tracy once, and now youโre grilling me?โ
Noticing Lowellโs anger, Elyse replied with a faint smile. โConsidering your and your sisterโs reputations, itโs hard to see you as good people.โ
Lowellโs expression chilled. โIโm not sure what Iโve done to offend you, but youโre not the police. You have no right to question me.โ
Undeterred, Elyse continued, โIf youโre avoiding such a simple question, let me ask directly. Did you fabricate the story of Tracyโs suicide at sea? Or are you the killer?โ
Lowellโs demeanor became even more forbidding. Jayden restrained him; otherwise, he might have lunged at Elyse.
Watching Lowellโs restraint, Elyse realized something: a truly innocent person wouldnโt remain silent under false accusations. His reluctance spoke volumes. He couldnโt produce a believable alibi.
Although increasingly convinced Lowell and Dolores were responsible for Tracyโs death, Elyse knew she couldnโt get them arrested. Nearly two weeks had passed since Tracyโs alleged suicide; any missing evidence would be gone.
Her trip to Liverton was about uncovering the truth and identifying the culprits. With her suspicions confirmed, staying in Liverton seemed pointless.
Shaun frowned. โEven if you doubt Lowell, this isnโt the right way to confront him. Youโre treating him like heโs already guilty.โ
Elyse ignored Shaun. Her voice was steady. โIโm convinced Lowell and Dolores are behind the murder. Howeverโฆโ
She paused, then addressed Lowell. โThereโs no remaining evidence, is there? With the time thatโs passed, any proof you took Tracy to Liverton and killed her would be gone, wouldnโt it?โ
Lowell remained silent, his gaze unwavering. . . .
