Chapter 113
โWhen that explosion happened years ago, I was in total shock. I wanted to save you, but someone held me back. Later, Callie saved you, but then she left, and I went with you to the hospital. I was so confused back then, scared out of my mind. I even wished I could trade places with you. Everyone thought I was the one who saved you. Even Mom and Dad said it was me. Everyone kept saying I saved your life, and by the time I realized I should explain, it was too late. Everyone believed it, and I was terrified.โ
Lisette looked up, her eyes red and filled with tears, gazing pitifully at Valerian.
Valerian felt a sharp pang in his heart as he looked at her.
โValerian, I swear I didnโt mean for this to happenโฆ but I know I messed up, letting everyone think it was me instead of Callie. Being only the adopted daughter of the Jewell family, I shouldnโt have let it happen. Maybe I should leave the Jewell family. Callie never liked me, and itโs my fault she left.โ
Lisette sobbed. โIโll pack my things right now. Valerian, tell Callie Iโm leaving. I wonโt take her family away anymore. Sheโs the real Jewell. Iโve always been an outsider.โ
Valerian reached out and grabbed Lisette.
โYou silly girl. Youโve been with the Jewell family for so long. Blood doesnโt matter anymore. Stop crying. I know you didnโt mean any harm. It wasnโt your fault. Anyone would have been confused in that situation.โ
โValerianโฆโ Lisette looked up at Valerian with hope.
โSilly girl.โ Valerian wiped her tears and hugged her, gently patting her shoulder.
โBut what about Callie? She must be furious, right?โ Lisette lowered her gaze, โI know she must be angry. Iโve apologized repeatedly, but she says sheโll never forgive me. I donโt know what to do, she wants to tell everyone the truthโฆ If everyone finds out I lied, how can I face anyone in Capitalton?โ
Valerian ruffled her hair. โDonโt worry about it. Iโll handle this. No one will ever find out you lied.โ
โBut-โ
โNo buts. Now take the fruit and go to your room to rest.โ
โValerian, youโre the best brother ever!โ Lisette hugged Valerian tightly and gave him a quick peck on the cheek. Valerian blushed to the roots of his hair, watching her dart away, his heart thumping wildly.
Calliope returned home with Silas. The entire car ride was shrouded in silence, creating a heavy atmosphere. Calliope felt a knot in her stomach. She knew she had saved her husbandโs nemesis. It was natural for Silas to be upset.
Even though she had explained, she understood that Silas probably still had reservations. She wasnโt sure how to smooth things over with him.
The last thing she wanted was to cause a rift with Silas because of Nigel. She knew where her priorities lay.
Once they got home, Calliope glanced at Silas and, summoning her courage, said, โHoney, I had my reasons. Can you please stop being mad?โ
