Chapter 113

โ€œWhen that explosion happened years ago, I was in total shock. I wanted to save you, but someone held me back. Later, Callie saved you, but then she left, and I went with you to the hospital. I was so confused back then, scared out of my mind. I even wished I could trade places with you. Everyone thought I was the one who saved you. Even Mom and Dad said it was me. Everyone kept saying I saved your life, and by the time I realized I should explain, it was too late. Everyone believed it, and I was terrified.โ€

Lisette looked up, her eyes red and filled with tears, gazing pitifully at Valerian.

Valerian felt a sharp pang in his heart as he looked at her.

โ€œValerian, I swear I didnโ€™t mean for this to happenโ€ฆ but I know I messed up, letting everyone think it was me instead of Callie. Being only the adopted daughter of the Jewell family, I shouldnโ€™t have let it happen. Maybe I should leave the Jewell family. Callie never liked me, and itโ€™s my fault she left.โ€

Lisette sobbed. โ€œIโ€™ll pack my things right now. Valerian, tell Callie Iโ€™m leaving. I wonโ€™t take her family away anymore. Sheโ€™s the real Jewell. Iโ€™ve always been an outsider.โ€

Valerian reached out and grabbed Lisette.

โ€œYou silly girl. Youโ€™ve been with the Jewell family for so long. Blood doesnโ€™t matter anymore. Stop crying. I know you didnโ€™t mean any harm. It wasnโ€™t your fault. Anyone would have been confused in that situation.โ€

โ€œValerianโ€ฆโ€ Lisette looked up at Valerian with hope.

โ€œSilly girl.โ€ Valerian wiped her tears and hugged her, gently patting her shoulder.

โ€œBut what about Callie? She must be furious, right?โ€ Lisette lowered her gaze, โ€œI know she must be angry. Iโ€™ve apologized repeatedly, but she says sheโ€™ll never forgive me. I donโ€™t know what to do, she wants to tell everyone the truthโ€ฆ If everyone finds out I lied, how can I face anyone in Capitalton?โ€

Valerian ruffled her hair. โ€œDonโ€™t worry about it. Iโ€™ll handle this. No one will ever find out you lied.โ€

โ€œBut-โ€

โ€œNo buts. Now take the fruit and go to your room to rest.โ€

โ€œValerian, youโ€™re the best brother ever!โ€ Lisette hugged Valerian tightly and gave him a quick peck on the cheek. Valerian blushed to the roots of his hair, watching her dart away, his heart thumping wildly.

Calliope returned home with Silas. The entire car ride was shrouded in silence, creating a heavy atmosphere. Calliope felt a knot in her stomach. She knew she had saved her husbandโ€™s nemesis. It was natural for Silas to be upset.

Even though she had explained, she understood that Silas probably still had reservations. She wasnโ€™t sure how to smooth things over with him.

The last thing she wanted was to cause a rift with Silas because of Nigel. She knew where her priorities lay.

Once they got home, Calliope glanced at Silas and, summoning her courage, said, โ€œHoney, I had my reasons. Can you please stop being mad?โ€
