Chapter 124

Calliope was Zeldaโ€™s daughter, but she was also the person Zelda despised the most.

โ€œIโ€™ve never heard a mother talk about her daughter like that,โ€ Silasโ€™s eyes grew even colder as he quietly clasped Calliopeโ€™s hand in his large, warm one, gently rubbing it to comfort her.

At first, Calliope didnโ€™t feel much. But Silasโ€™s comforting gesture suddenly made her throat tighten with emotion.

She always thought she was strong, but now she found herself on the verge of tears.

People often become especially vulnerable in front of those they care about.

She hadnโ€™t felt particularly wronged before, but now, inexplicably, she felt overwhelmed by it.

โ€œZelda, donโ€™t worry about my reputation. I couldnโ€™t care less about it. But you all better keep to yourselves. If you come after my wife again, the Jewell Group might as well prepare for bankruptcy.โ€

Silas had an air of a protective husband. He couldnโ€™t bear to see his Callie suffer even the slightest injustice.

Zeldaโ€™s face darkened, disbelief etched across her features.

Silas was defending Calliope. Didnโ€™t he realize what kind of person she was? She was unworthy of him.

โ€œMr. Myers, Callie might be my sister, but she isnโ€™t a good fit for you. Weโ€™re just trying to look out for you,โ€ Valerian interrupted. โ€œYou can check her past for yourself. Sheโ€™s been trouble since she was a kid. Sheโ€™s made countless mistakesโ€ฆโ€

Silas cut Valerian off before Valerian could continue.

โ€œLike saving your life, you mean?โ€ Silas chuckled softly. โ€œValerian, are you saying my wife shouldnโ€™t have saved you? Was that a mistake? Should you have gone to meet your maker? Maybe you ought to return that life she saved.โ€

Valerianโ€™s face alternated between red and black in embarrassment.

Zelda looked at Valerian, confused. โ€œWhat does he mean?โ€

โ€œWe donโ€™t welcome you here, so please leave!โ€ Rafferty stepped forward, noticing Calliope didnโ€™t want to engage with them further.

โ€œYou all will regret this!โ€ Zelda fumed, glaring at everyone. โ€œYouโ€™re all defending her, but eventually, youโ€™ll see. She has no education or skills. Sheโ€™s a walking disaster. Mr. Myers, Iโ€™m warning you out of kindness. If she wasnโ€™t so malicious, do you think a mother would speak of her daughter this way?โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s because youโ€™re not fit to be Callieโ€™s mother,โ€ Silasโ€™s voice was icy.

โ€œMr. Myers, you must be out of your mind,โ€ Valerian sneered. โ€œOne day, youโ€™ll realize we were correct.โ€

โ€œAre you still here?โ€ the bald guy grabbed a broom to shoo them away.

Valerian and Zelda left, their faces flushed with anger.

When Zelda returned home in disarray, Lisette had regained her composure. She sat on the couch, her hands on her face, feeling frantic. She remembered every foolish thing she had done. She was seething with anger.

It must have been that wretch, Calliope.

โ€œMom, what happened to you?โ€ Lisette looked up, startled to see Zelda with her hair a mess, covered in something sticky.

โ€œThat useless brat!โ€ Zelda shouted in frustration.

โ€œIt was Callie,โ€ Valerian muttered, looking grim.

โ€œCallie? Callie dumped that stuff on you, Mom? How could she do that to her own mother? Mom, itโ€™s all my fault. Callie must not like me, so she did this. Itโ€™s one thing for her to come after me, but to treat you this way is unforgivable.โ€
